Default Using infared temp gun on shinny motor can? How to get accurate temps?

Im using an infared temp gun on a novak velociti motor. I was thinking put a black square of electrical tape to get a more accurate reading?? Or the center strip is fine for readings? OR would anyone know the emissivity rating for the novak motors?
NOTE: the center strip is not polished aluminum like the can, but still shinny, is it anodized aluminum?

A little flat black muffler or engine block paint from the auto parts store in a strategic spot would be one possibility. I'd go that way before black tape...
