Don't forget though, for the guys out there that love the suspension and chassis, but not the whole 4wd F1 thing, theres always personal hacking!(oh, I mean "modification" )

Pull the shaft out along with all the front gearbox stuff and you still wont be as free as the direct drive cars, but you'll be a hell of a lot closer. The only problem I see with this option is that the battery is push a good bit more foward in the F201 than it is in the F10X series cars. Thats no big deal when the car is 4wd, but it may leave you wanting for more rear grip if you switch it to 2wd. But only time will tell.

Best part is, its a hack(modification ) that can be done and undone, so you see which way you like better.

At the two local tracks here that run F1 class, they run 5 minutes just like sedan, so runtime isn't an issue.

As for switching to 2wd after getting your butt kicked enough. It really wouldn't matter to me. I drive F1 class for fun. To get away from the all-to-serious stock sedan guys. So I would keep driving the F201 whether I was getting creamed or not. Its just too cool not to leave it as is!

See how that motor is in there ? Looks like we will be stuck with Tamiya gears.... I am not a big tamiay runner... other than the F103. Is that motor that same setup as other Tamiya shaft drive TC's ?

Thanks

spooky

I'm guessing that they use the same spurgear as the TB01. The 0.4 pitch gears are very close to 64p, so you can use 64p pinions on them and not notice any adverse effects. Otherwise, Tamiya does have a fairly good range or gearing choices, so I don't think you'll be disappointed in this regard. Of course, this is all speculation until we actually see the car!

Tamiya is set to release the new F201 in mid-March here in the USA. Tower Hobbies has it listed in their inventory.

Tamiya America reports that they will not be available until April. They are supposed to be available in March in Japan.

April... that's too long of a wait...
I guess I'm just going to order one from RainbowTen in Japan.

I can wait till April. It will give my wallet time to recover from my preseason shopping spree that I just went on.

All I know is that I have to have one!

If you order from OMNI models shipping is free for orders over $100.00. I think OMNI is part of Tower.

I haven't raced a F1 car since they first came out. But, this new F201 is definitely on my "must have" list. As far as making runtime, I don't think that will be too much of an issue since most of the racers have 3k cells nowadays. I've run a 9 turn on carpet (carpet has more drag than asphalt) for 5 minutes with a touring car and made runtime (albeit just barely). So, I think (hope?) that running a stock motor with 3K's for 6 minutes shouldn't be a problem.

Now for a different twist. Given Tamiya's penchant to use existing parts to make a new car, this means that some of the existing optional parts may fit into this new car. If that's the case, then maybe, just maybe the front oneway (from perhaps the EVO series cars -- it has a shaft driven drivetrain as well) will fit into the F1's front gearbox.

That would definitely add back some of the driving thrill and challenge that some are looking for.

Well around here they don't extend the race length for F1. So runtime really isn't an issue for me. Besides, I still have my other Tamiya F1 thats all decked out and ready to race.

I just hope the new chassis is more side-by-side pack compatible than the old F103 chassis' were. It takes some work to get a side-by-side pack in those cars.

From the pics that have been shown so far though, it looks like Tamiya is still aiming mainly at stick pack use with the new chassis.
