What is the difference between the pitches of the gears? Are there any advantages to using say 48 over 64?

Also if I were to switch from 64P to 48P what would I need to change apart form the gears? Belts? etc

Pinion and spur that is it. No speed advantage either way

64P has a smoother gear mesh, and is more for on-road. The teeth are fragile, and it's vary easy to grind them with bad gear mesh. 48P is more durable and best with trucks and buggies, but they work just as well on-road. 48P has fewer gear options than 64P, but they can take a beating.

Racers would argue that 64 pitch is more efficient, and also allows for finer fdr/rollout adjustments. Asphalt/dirt types will argue that 48 pitch is more forgiving to debris.

While I agree that 64 pitch can be a bit smoother, I think its efficiency advantage is too small for most of us to tell the difference(myself included), the main reason why I use 64 pitch is the flexibility in gear ratio options(much easier to get exactly the final drive ratio I want)....

It is also a good idea to find out what pitch most racers at your club use.
Unless you want to come along with every pinion and spur gear ever made in 64 pitch, you may need to borrow one from a fellow racer to help you out on the day
For what it's worth - the electric guys at your local club all use 48P.
