I have just bought a new SPX and would like to run it on an oval. I have read all of the posts on this thread and have somewhat of a feeling for the way the SPX works but still have no idea how to start gearing. I run on a high banked long oval (1100 ft run line, yep no typo, 1100 ft). We run 17.5 motors with straight axle (pan cars). Racers are running anywhere from 1.3:1 to 1.82:1 gear ratios. I have been running around the 1.6:1 to 1.8:1 ratios with a Tekin RS. This is a track that is full throttle all the way around, never letting off since it has 28 degree banked turns.

I thought the SPX would possibly be the best way to go on this track with profile 7, I'm not sure now since some are saying not to run the higher profiles if you are on full throttle for much of the track.

Does anyone have any idea where to start gearing and what profile might be best?

Thanks,

Bob~H

Default LRP SPX SETTINGS

Just puchased a SPX to run in my 1/12th 8 min indoor carpet racing.
Plan to use a 7.5bl and 10.5 bl

Looking for some profiles. Tried a few on the bench but the brakes etc have me puzzled.
Throttle is straight forward but need some advice on the brake settings.

Hi guys

I'm hoping for a little gearing advice please

I'm running a TRF 416 WE TC indoors on rubber tyres
LRP 10.5 stock spec motor and and SPX stock speck speedo set on profile 8

The track is quite technical but with a 100+ foot straight

could you give me a starting point please?

Cheers

Paul

Start on profile 6 for the throttle, and '0' on both brake profiles - we don't use brakes in 12th! For the four speedo settings, you will have 2,6,0,0.

This will give you some additional motor timing, no drag brake, and fully proportional brakes when you pull the stick back. Profiles 7 and 8 adjust the timing 'on-the-fly', but we have not made them work in 12th. It seems the cars are too fast on acceleration, and there is not enough time between corners, for the timing software to have a good effect. HTH

I would like to know if the SPX works on profile 7 nd 8 with a single cell 3.7v lipo. I am trying to set up my pan car . I have a novak booster 13.5 dou motor and the tp5000 40c 1cell lipo. what is a good starting penion and spur and profile . My rear tires are 2.2inch I ran on a large track.

Last weekend, I changed my Gen-X 10 over to single cell with the same motor, pack and Novak booster as you plan to use. You can see the pics that I posted today on the CRC Manufacturer's thread.

With SPX profile set at 8 and center hole timing on the Duo, I currently have an 88 spur and 45T pinion on my car. I started with 56/58mm for the tires. (Edited)

Have tested twice this week on asphalt. No overheating issues with the specified gearing; but, I plan to test tomorrow with a lot lower gearing to take advantage of getting more revs with the SPX.

With the Novak Booster, you should tape the ESC's on/off switch in the off position. You only use the on/off switch on the Booster. Works great!

2.2" Rear tires = 55.88mm < 56/58mm

Oops! I was thinking my TrackMagnets started at 2.2". Whereas, they are actually 2.4". Dang metric conversions...LOL. Thanks kn. Edited above.

Back to SPX topic...

I run the the SPX in my Pro-10 on Profile 7 with a Novak Booster and the Thunder Power 5000mAh 1s LiPo too, but use a Tekin Redline 13.5 or LRP X-11 13.5 Stock Spec motor. Motor timing on the Tekin is 10-deg, LRP X11 is stock.

I run an 88/36 combo with 56mm F/R. This yields approx a 72mm Rollout. Our tracks back straight is about 110ft long.

Good stuff about the gearing. Those are two motors I have not tried.

Thanks kn.

give the motor a bit of timing on the end bell

go for about 5 and check your temps after 6 mins maybe go lower but better to start high and see what happens

i used punch number 7 with no brag brake or initial brake

We had an interesting session at the local track last meet. 3 guys had bought the spx and the x11 10.5 so it was going to be interesting to see the speed differences and gearing choices. We have another couple of guys who were waiting for these speedies so there was a bit of a buzz in the pits wanting to see who did what and how it all worked out.

Guy one kept his gearing at 6.0 with profile 7 all day when we usually run around 4.8 to 5.1 for 10.5. This was the 4 teeth he had read about here as well so this is good thinking. He was quick all day and came 3rd overall but he was more playing with car set up as he was previously using the car in Mod. He was more than happy with the performance he was getting and will have a bit more of a play with gearing next round thinking maybe another tooth down might find that perfect balance.

Guy two did not heed the warnings of us other spx users and kept his gearing at 5.1 and profile 7. He set fastest lap of the day in round 1 and commented how his car was flying. 2nd run he thermalled his motor and that was the end of that. He then put in a new Losi 10.5 and kept everything the same and commented how the losi felt slow compared to the LRP motor. He went down 2 teeth with the new motor on run 3 but was not really willing to try anything out there with his gearing and was willing to let us try things and run conservative. I guess thermaling a motor day 1 is not a nice feeling.

I did the exact opposite to these guys and went a bit wild with my gearing. I stuck with profile 7 all day till the last run when i tried profile 8. To start off i tried 6.3 with p7 which was good and had plenty of speed. I then took it down to 5.8 to see if there was much of a difference. The car was slower and did not have the same amount of punch or top end as 6.3 and the boost did not kick in as hard or when it was needed. I then went all the way up to 7.0 which did the same at going down to 5.8 and it was a little bit soft and not up to pace. At this point i should have switched to profile 8 to see if that made a difference but did not do this for some reason. For arguments sake i then changed back to a 6.0 and found a pretty nice sweet spot for the track at profile 7. Funny how this is what Guy one chose straight away and was happy with all day. After thinking a little more about how the spx works i set the car back up to 6.3 and put profile 8 on this time and the car was going really slow and had no punch. I thought this was weird but goes to show that the higher profiles really need that high gearing to work. I put it back to profile 7 and kept it at 6.3 for my final run as it was getting late. The car was an absolute rocket but got really hot after 3 minutes so i pulled the run and was happy with my first days testing with this new set up.

From all of this I suggest that anyone using this speedy throw out the rule book for gearing and start re writing it for yourself and your own track. Finding that sweet spot where the boost kicks in at the right time is the key as you can have all the speed at the end of the straight but using the extra punch out the corners and up the hills in our case is where its at. All the gearing advice i got was pretty tame but there were a couple of posts that i took heed to.

I would suggest to new users try profile 7 and lose 4 to 6 teeth on the pinion from what ever you are currently running and just temp after 3, 4 and 5 minutes on your first couple of runs and move forward or backwards from there. And profile 8 I would drop 6 to 8 teeth on the pinion and move forward or backwards from there.

i will post another report after next meet. We should have 5 running this speedy then and it will be on for young and old.
