yes eirik...

my driveshafts really do shatter a lot..i thaught i build something wrongly as it wasn't the case for the one way diff...i rebuild it and the same thing of shattering shafts came again when i locked my steering...hmm..guess my questions are answered...the steel spool really gives the shattering shafts...but is there any way to correct it??like cut the drive shafts shorter or something>?

Kelvin,

The reason why driveshafts shatter with a steel spool is because they are not real constant velocity (although they are called CVDs). So when you have a spool and you turn your wheels, the spool will provide a constant velocity to the driveshaft, but the joint will make the rotating speed of the wheel vary around that value (during one complete turn, the speed of the wheel will increase and then decrease, twice) which causes chatter.

Now about steel/alloy/delrin spool, a good point have been raised about inertia, but you also have to consider the stiffness of the spool. A steel spool will have no flex and so there will be a lot of chatter (especially with a brand new spool that gives no play to the driveshaft's pin). And a lot of chatter means a lot of losses in terms of grip.

A spool with delrin outdrives on the contrary will have a lot of flex (delrin is far from being a strong plastic material) and so the chatter will be minimal with that. An alloy spool will just be an in-between those two.

if thats the case....i don't think the steel spool is a good alternative for now since it has got this problem of chattering which reduces speed and produces hell of a lot of noice...how come the spools of the tc3 do not have this problem?

..what spool and by what make do you guys own..apparently i have super glued one of my one way diffs and it seems like it has got lesser of that problem of wheels chattering...maybe it is wise to switch to that then the steel spools.or do you guys have got a solution to it like after mayket outdrives or are you running with the chattering shafts?

I have a solid steel speedtech spool, don't really notice much chattering to be honest. It's pretty light too, probably about the same as the one-way

TC3's do actually have chatter with a spool, but their "threshold" for staying smooth is a little higher, I would say. If you were to do the popular modification of installing team losi steering knuckles, you could definitely notice the chatter, as this mod gives the car more throw.

It also seems that losi has come up with a nice new universal to reduce chatter. You can see a pic of it in this month's Xtreme R/C magazine. They basically set up a universal with two pivoting points on the axle side (two universals in one). So, at full throw, both of the universals will only be pivoting at half the angle.

Im running the Speedtech spool as well, and did not chatter at all with it.

I'd like to try a milled down version of this spool, and spools out of different materials though just to see if steering will increase. RROC is coming up in 5 months and I want to have this car absolutely dialed with a spool or diff by then.

I notice the spool chatters more in Stock than say 19t or Mod. That's just my observation. So I never run the spool in stock. Always a oneway. One idea I do have is to run Pro4 front spindles with Pro4 axles and IRS TC3 dawgbones. You'll have to enlarge the slots more in the spool. But the dawgbones should help reduce some chatter. TC3's do start out with some chatter. But once broken in... it mostly goes away. At least that's been my experience. I could turn the wheels full lock and spin the drivetrain (without motor) and it'll keep rolling smoothly as it would with the tires pointed straight. I have not been able to do that to my Yokomo SD or EvoIV with a spool.... yet.
