Yes
Lipo cells don't like to be chared over 4.2V and each cell will drop in Voltage slightly differently when discharging and increase slightly differently when charging. All of my 2S cells require at least 5 minutes of balancing every charge.

When charging, I always let the cells balance before charging at full rate.

You honestly don't have to balance the batteries every charge, that's a very big myth. There are many articles in various RC magazines that support that statement. Some people only balance them once every 10-15 charges. I've charged mine multiple times without a balancer and when I put a balancer on it it only took a minute or so. I would suggest balancing every time if you are racing competitively.

Kinda depends on your battery on how often you need to balance. I've got a pack that has NEVER been out of balance and some that are always out of balance. I won't name brands here but the one out of balance has a much bigger name in the RC world than the other. So yes I'd get one before too long. One thing to be careful of is there is no industry standard for balance plugs. There are 4 or 5 different types of plugs that are pretty widely used. Make sure you can plug your battery into the balancer or you'll waste your money.

the lipo i bought was the Orion 30c 3800mAh 2 cell SLPB carbon ed (dont know what it all means though). i switched out the tamiya plug for deans on the harness and as for the charger i kinda found a cheap one thinking it would be adequate, its a Pro-Peak Quattro Plus (auto cell detection 1~3 cells Charge current: 0.1-3.0A) is there a balancer i can add to this?

i put on about 8 months of racing and storage before i ever picked up a ballancer. My packs (SMC) where balanced in about 2-3 minutes. Thats pretty closely matched cells....

Glad i did not pay much for the balancer
