Default Gearing for Novak 17.5?

So on Novaks website it recommends a FDR of 3.5 for a 17.5 but i am currently running a 4 FDR and am running about 170 after a 5 minute run. Has anyone else been able to run a 3.5 fdr?

I'm running a 3.51 FDR with my Novak 17.5 in my JRX-S

I didn't get a chance to check the temp at the last race but it felt nearly stone cold when I picked up the car after the heat race. I hope to get the temp gun on it tomorrow when I race it.

We run a 3.5 final also with no problems. What ESC? Is the timing set stock? Belts tight? High bit track?

I would like to know the answer to this also. I have to run my 17.5 at about a 4.36 FDR in order for it to stay within temp. I am running an Xray T2 '008 (1.7 IR) with an LRP Sphere Comp TC ESC. I had someone work on the settings with the ESC for me and they took out all of the drag brake and knocked the punch profile back to 5 from 8. I still couldn't run any lower than the 4.36 though.

I ran mine at 3.5 and it ran two races and smoked!!! I would start at 4.0 FDR and check temps after three minutes.

I think the answer is, it depends. I have a GTB SS version with a Novak 17.5 running it in both a TB-03 and 416 and can run the 3.5 FDR without problems on a big open track...however I run a higher ratio on the local carpet track in the 3.7~4.0 range. Motor temps haven't been an issue. What are the local fast guys running in terms of FDR for 17.5?

It depends on the motor, car's weight, traction, setup, and driving style. Some people can get around the track more effeciently, using less throttle at time, and rolling through the corners at the right angles and speeds, while other cars are setup less agressively, rolling through the corners and down the straights easier, requiring less power, etc...

We have had guys run 17.5 motors down to 3.1 FDR's before in Foam Sedan, but I only recommend that if you are willing to toast your motor, and usually only Novak's can take any amount of extended high heats.

I got to check temps after a 5 min race yesterday. OK, it wasn't "stone cold", LOL, but I measured ~120 deg after coasting to the sidelines. I will say that I'm not a super agressive driver and tend to use more of the smooth style which may make some difference. Maybe if I was a more aggressive "pro" style driver it might heat up more. Maybe next year......, LOL.

I ended up around 4.40 at the Novak race, I believe you were there so that should give you some idea. Temps were not all that bad either.
