What I ve seeen is that it comes down to a weight issue.

I went to a pro race (team orion invitational) where there was no minimum weight and you had to run lipo to be competitive it seemed like. Once racing rules tke advantage of the decreased weight of a lipo, theres no way nimh will keep up

There are some in the club running lipos and brushless and their fast but the driving skills are a bit lacking and their are those who can drive and they are the ones winning, some lipo, some not.
I tell the new racers, work on your driving and set up before worrying about getting the latest go fast goodies.

To add one more bit of info, the lipo guys are required to add weight to get up to the ROAR spec for touring.

Do you have a LiPO comaptible charger? How about a power supply? If you don't have a LiPO compatible charger you could buy the Turnigy Accucell 6 which is only $37 but you need a power supply for it. You could go with a Yeah Racing LiPO for about $50, a LiPO balancer for about $30 and never buy NiMH cells again. That adds up to about $130 with shipping which is not a bad deal IMO and if you already have a LiPO compatible charger it will end up being less.

How much are 4 NiMh race packs? Promatch, which has great prices- $51 per 6 cell matched. So the cost is the same at the start.

Then, NiMh lasts you 1/2 a year, maybe a year of racing, 2 lipos could last you 2 years or more.

But when the start up cost is about the same, why make a new driver have to deal with the hassles of NiMh, when a lipo is charge and go.

With lipos, a new driver can spend more time working on driving and set up- the lipo will be more consistent for them.

everybody cracks me up with the charge and go attitude with lipos. when everyone makes the switch to lipo it will be the same as nimh. you will still be wondering why the fast guys are still faster in the strait or rip out of the corners.

they will start messing around with the way the handle their packs and figure out to to ruin them quicker, but in term be faster. its the same with brushless motors.

they cant be made equal every single time. so there will always be better cells and motors. and once the companies start making cells for the racers like ib did, they reliability will go down and we will be racing one pack for a year.

just my 2 cents.

Default Lipo

Lipo isn't as expensive as some make it seem...
I got back in last spring after a short break......bought 1 4800 Lipo....and used that the whole season...3 qual + 1 main per club day and quite a few practice runs.

before I used to have at least 4 nimh packs (min $50 per pack)...that constantly needed care....or would just die.

you can get away with just one...2 is nicer to help allow a bit of practice.....

Above all else just have fun...

What I don't understand is what some guys are doing to their nimh packs so they only last half the season. I run some 3600 packs that are 2 years old and are not that much off their original numbers and can still run with the top guys in our club running touring car.

That being said, I do run lipo in my dirt oval car due to the no weight limit rules. Personally, other than weight, I haven't seen any difference in on track performance.
