Default novak xbr versus novak havoc for spec / vta racing

I am looking at the novak xbr or the novak havoc at this time for a really cheap esc to do some spec / vta racing. also open to other ESCs if there are some that fall in the low price range.

what are people's thoughts on the xbr versus the havoc?

Is the havoc available as ESC only?

No the havok is not available as a stand alone Esc.
I believe the Havok is a rebadged Xbr with some things taken
out of it or Manufactured in China to lower the Price to be competative.
What I hate about the Havok is it's only offered with a 8.5 motor.
I know its marketed to the young curb hitting generation speed freaks.
So to use it your going to need to buy another motor . Which brings you into
the 200 price range for esc and motor. I myself would buy one if it was offered as a stand alone or with a 17.5. I race more than bash so a 8.5
is no use to me because I am not any where near mod level yet .

I'll post my same reply here as in the USVTA thread to see if anyone knows good or bad of this speedo...

There's this one for $85:

Associated/LRP Brushless ESC

It doesn't seem to have a lipo cutoff, but with the runtimes you'll get with the 21.5 I wouldn't even begin to worry about it. When the car starts to slow (probably after 30+ minutes) just shut it off and you'll be well above 6V. Even if you add an external cutoff like the Smart Stop you'll still be ahead of the game, money-wise.

I'm sure it's not the highest-performance ESC out there so you'll probably be giving away something there, but it's cheap and will get you in the game. I'd bet if you crank the motor timing you won't be that far off.

thats an esc I am looking at. Don't need anything fancy really as this is something I probably won't run often.

Talking about the same ESC in the USVTA thread, it appears it does indeed have a lipo cutoff but you can't turn reverse off. That bugs me, but it's a personal preference thing.

i agree that the Havok is extremely tempting... Sadly it's offered with an 8.5?!?!?

If anyone at Novak frequents these boards, give us some options! I'd buy one (or more!) with a 21.5 or 17.5

Novak has this blurb on their Havok web page:

I can't imagine they'd say that if they didn't plan on releasing the ESC separately. Are they telling everyone to buy the system and toss the 8.5? I doubt it.

I really dont understand why you cant just get a combo with any wind. It should be about the same money for all of it. Wouldnt you think that it cost the same to make a 21.5 as an 8.5?

I agree. Plus they wouldnt be tauting its economy if you had to toss a $75 motor to add the 13.5.

Novak has listened to your requests for the Havoc esc comboed with the SS17.5 Pro and SS21.5 Pro motors, We will be releasing information soon for these spec systems (which include the ROAR approved spec motors with colored timing rings.)

The street price will be slightly higher than the Havoc/8.5 combo already shipping. The Havoc controller, along with all other Novak products, are built here in our Irvine, CA factory, not China.

Too bad they didn't have something packaged like this 6 months ago. At a fair price they'll sell a good number of them.

That's good news, and I'm sure the Havoc/21.5 combo will be very popular for USVTA.

However, do you plan on releasing the Havoc ESC all on it's own?
