How does these motors compare to the Orion D3 motors, especially the 17.5/13.5 varieties?

ROAR has finished the evaluation and approved the LRP 12.25mm tuning rotor for single cell racing in the X-12 motors. The listing has a couple typographical errors, but ROAR provided assurance that those will be fixed soon.

You'll need to add type of car and track to get help with that.

We have medium track size with medium grip. Size of track slightly bigger then at Snowbirds 2011. Also I have TC6 with 87 spur.

Take a look at the setup sheets on the Team Associated site. You'll notice that most of the guys are running a 20 tooth pinion with the 87 spur on the TC6, and that they're also running the 5.0 Octa wind motor (some run the 4.5 on larger tracks), which runs a little more efficiently (read cooler) than the normal 4-strand 5.0 wind. On the ESC side, the LRP SXX TC V2 also runs a little cooler than the prior models. That, along with the Feel and Boost settings listed, is designed to run at the sharp end of the grid at the international level, so I wouldn't recommend to start there.
Can't recommend a different gearing until you try it, since heat/inefficiency can result from either undergearing or overgearing, so you have to find the sweet spot for your conditions. But detune the ESC to start with, check temps after a couple of minutes to make sure you're on the safe side, and adjust from there.

I have a X12 6.5T Octa in DEX410 and it's getting really hot in about 3min and I can feel it slowing down. (I'm using a SXX TC V2 ESC).

If a motor is on it's way out, can that cause the motor to over heat?

Long story. My first LRP SXX TC v2 brakes started to get soft and it started cogging on my two motor. I order another speedy while this one is being sent back for repairs. Yesterday when I ran the speedy the motor got really hot with gearing on LRP recommendation of 10.8 which is what I ran in my B.44 with no heating problems. I did notice a little cogging yesterday, but not much. (yes i'll check the lead, but it's a new lead)

After the run yesterday I received 1 LED flash on the ESC temp and 8 LED flashes on the motor temp.

OK... is there anyone willing to explain to me how the whole "insert" thing works for timing?

You know, like this insert gives "X" degrees of timing... and that insert gives "Y" degrees of timing... Etc. Etc.

Thanks.

I didn't even think to go directly to the LRP website to look

Thanks again.

has anyone been experiencing fading of there motors. i run 17.5 with a Tekin/ 2 cell, touring car. motor has lots of power, but after about 4mins i notice the motor fades drastically. What can i do to prevent this or does this mean the motor is going bad?

I think it means you need to change the configuration of your speedo or change the timing of this motor. You didn't tell us the timing insert you are using on the motor, so we need to know that to help.

I'm actually in the same boat.
I'm running a oo insert in the motor
my setup is Tekin Pro/2cell - nonboosted
final gearing is 3.84

and around 4 minutes mark motor starts to fade.
motor temp is around 130 f.

any ideas which way to go
