Actually the Lotus 88 was a "twin chassis" car....the main chassis was for the driver, engine and drivetrain, the "second" chassis was for the body work and wings and tunnels, and it was separately suspended, independent from the main chassis so that the vibrations from the track surface did NOT effect the side pods and tunnels. In secret testing it turned extremely competitive lap times; and had it been allowed to be raced and developed, it would likely have been yet another Chapman and Lotus success story. The problem was that many of the other teams, led by Ferrari, petitioned the FIA to declare it illegal, as the other teams were tired of having to ditch their designs and start all over again due to another Chapman innovation. I'm not making this up, it is absolutely true!

This action by the teams and the FIA was the beginning of the end of the original Formula One as it had always been up to that point. From this point on, Formula One would see more and more interference by the FIA, as it continued to restrict and virtually outlaw innovation in car design, to the point where we have 24 cars or so, that are virtually identical in design.

Nice Car! Good Job! Rubber Tires? TRG, Ride, Shimizu Racing Slick maybe.

I have my SP-1 setup in the F103 trim for testing!

I must say over all I like this era in F1 the most! 1980's

To Volraracer. Porposing was the plague that stop the Lotus 80 (and Arrows A2).

To Team Lotus:
Lotus 88 was banned as Ecclestone revenge for Chapman fight to the fan car...

Hi, Finally completed my first F1 body of Lewis Hamilton's car which I think
is the prettiest F1 car this year. I have painted many bodies but found
the F1 bodies very hard to complete. I just wish I had Vyger's and Brad
Palmer's talent. It came out better than I thought. Regards

Yes, the Lotus 80 did indeed suffer from porpoising due to the skirts jamming in the curved side pods, and the fact that the chassis wasn't stiff enough to control the huge aero downforce of the car; the chassis would flex and rivets would pop. This was before the advent of carbon fiber chassis.

As to the Lotus 88, I had never heard about the Ecclestone revenge story; I do believe that could have been part of the problem, that does make sense; however, it is also a fact that Ferrari led other teams to vote against the Lotus 88 too! the FIA had to scramble to come up with a viable reason to declare the car illegal, as there was nothing specifically in the rules that covered the design principles of that car. A classic example of FIA abuse of power. It almost caused Chapman to quit F1 racing altogether, he was so upset about the whole mess and the way it was handled. At Long Beach the scrutineers initially declared the car legal and then reversed their decision under pressure, and the same thing happened in Britain too. Can you blame Chapman for being pissed?!! After that he finally gave up fighting them, and entered a revised car with standard chassis.

Question? Dose the Tamiya Axle counter weight work?

Today I got way more speed out of this thing, not sure way but it's cool!! No need for a 17.5 or 13.5 setup now

I ran both setups today, narrow with currant rubber wheels and tires F104 type & my F103 setup with Tamiya Rubber F103 Wide chassis set also the rubber slicks where from 1998 I would say With this new found speed found today compared to yesterday the SP-1 setup in narrow form, was all over the place, kicking the rear out on every turn yep there it went spinning out. ok that was more like the cars I remember.

Now with the F103 setup on the car chassis adjusted wide setup F103 Wings Tires (16 yrs old) Body all on the car now, this thing is a blast to drive. Thinking how can these old tire work better than the new Tamiya F1 slick?

Arrows

That Arrows car was very cool...the whole car was basically one huge wing! Too bad it too suffered from the same affliction as the Lotus 80...porpoising.
Nevertheless, I liked that car!!

This POS from the '83 Can Am series was all ground effect tunnel in the middle. I remember reading about it in Car & Driver when I was a teenager but I forgot the name.

If memory serves me correctly, the car was named after the title sponsor Escort. The driver is Milt Minter and car was run and designed by ex Pontiac engineer Herb Adams.
