What type of carpet is used for indoor carpet racing ???

Wouldnt be practical for us to import carpet so need to know what kind or what name its called so we can source it locally in South Africa.

Ozite, I believe is the name of it.

Ozite is correct!! Problem is I believe CRC is the only supplier....

There is Primafelt too I think and Primafelt GT :confused: If the GT makes my lap times quicker i'll have exclusive use of it on the track please... :p:D

Now I can't speak for the Ozite stuff used in the States but here in the UK the Prima brand carpet we use is basically "event carpet", ie the kind of stuff that is rolled out temporarily in exhibition halls. It's a flat and relatively thin unbacked weave. It has no pile so does not pull cars to the side.

I'm sure that there are carpet suppliers in SA that can sell you something similar.

UK uses something other than Ozite.....I learned something new:nod:.... The ozite (older versions) looked alot like speaker box carpet......new stuff is supposed to have a rubber backing to help it stay together better. I would be curious to see some of the Euro rug.....

Yes, the UK carpet does look a lot like speaker box carpet. It is usually grey. No rubber backing on it though.

link on bottom to a PDF. 2nd page of PDF on the bottom is what our track uses. We had Blue before which was cool. You can also splice it together to make staggered lane dividers for oval racing.

Technologically the racing carpet is called needle felt carpet.
We use locally made stuff, actually different versions of it. The oldest ones we have are over 10 years old, they have plastic backing, which makes them very easy to roll and they can be stored in upright position, they won't stretch. If the carpet doesn't have slippery plastic backing, you have to be a lot more careful when rolling it together and they should be stored laying down.

Found out its basically what is used for offices local in business parks.
No pile, rubber lined, no fluff carpet.
Found a supplier who has it available in Grey and dark grey.
Having looked at it, it looks just like the non lined carpet we use for car audio.

I realize this is an old thread I am bringing up ...BUT,
I've been putting a lot of thought into how best to get a small track at home. It occurred to me that I may be able to roll out carpet when I want to race my cars then roll up and put away when not in use.
We have a large rectangular paver stone patio in our backyard. The paver stones are even and level, yet they do have a small dip between each stone. I dont think this would be an issue once carpet is laid over the patio stones? The area we have is 20' x 40' approx, -I think this space could work for my 1/18th and two "mini" 1/10th on-road cars (they're a tamiya mini which is kind of a 1/12th scale and a TOP sabre 4wd mini). I am thinking the 1/18th scale would work best ...mostly I want to be able to get some drive time in w/o having to drive 2 hours or wait for the next club event. And I don't want anything permanent in the yard ...hence why roll away carpet is what came to mind.
Does this sound feasible?
What kind of carpet ?? I was thinking of going to home depot and getting some industrial tiny to no pile carpet ...something like this:

For an area that small, have you considered interlocking foam? Basically puzzle Matt's for children.

It's easy to stack and put away, plus if there is a damaged piece, you just remove that square and replace it with another one.

My local club uses a highschool gym so we always roll out the carpet before racing. Duct tape the seams if you can't get it in just one roll. As far as that type of carpet- it should work fine. I have raced many a cars on that carpet down dorm hallways or in some of the engineering buildings on campus. The handling characteristics are a little different than an ozite carpet, but there is definitely grip there. Have you considered asking a track/club near you if they are getting rid of old racing carpet/have any spare sections to give/sell you?
