Default Modified Touring and Lipos

Hey guys,

Just wanted to start a thread to discuss lipos with specific reference to racing in modified touring.

In particular, I was hoping to get some feedback on which lipos people are using, what C ratings are recommended (minimum etc), which packs people are using and any issues resulting from using lipos. Lipo trays, chassis, lipo capacity, gearing, lipo C ratings, safety, brushless motors - all these things and more!

With lipos coming in for racing in 2009, I am keen to hear what peoples experiences have been

I'll start..

For those racing modified touring, which lipo packs are you using at the moment? Would you recommend them? Issues?

This past season I ran an orion 3200.

On a smaller track with a 10.5 motor it held up fine.

At my home track where we run mod, a 7.5, and most definitely my 3.5 motor was to much for it. It would make the run just fine, but on one hot day, the battery swelled from the heat generated.

In off-road the batteries never missed a beat, regardless of the motor used.

Hope this helps. I plan on investing in a couple of 5000 packs next season.

One other racer used a Reedy 3200 and it didn't last 2 months with a 5.5 in it. Completely useless now. *sigh*

I am running 13.5 right now but plan on running a 6.5 or 7.5 mod motor later in the year on my orion 3600 25c it should hold up.

I have tried a 4.5 on my 4000 trinity lipro pack worked great

On-Road:

if you have a look, the STCC series here in the UK has just finished running.
There were three classes running (13.5, 10.5 and 6.5 all with brushed equivalents). All the classes were able to use lipos as well as 6-cell.
Personally I ran a trakpower 4900 in the 6.5 class. People were running the 3600 packs without any power loss problems, but obviously had to add weight to make the 1500g limit.

6.5 with Lipo seems to be the sweet spot for Modifed on-road with Lipo, any lower turn seems to be too much.

Off-road:
most of the guys I know run anywhere from 5.5 to 7.5 with lipo packs (most are using trakpower also) with the lower winds being 4wd compared to 2wd

Hope this helps.

I have recently jumped on the lipo bandwagon with both 10.5 and mod. So far I am running IP3800's down to 3.5t the 10.5 does not generate any heat at all in these packs but the 3.5 adds at least 10 degrees celcius to their temp. I would say this is a good way of tell if your packs can handle the motor.

BTW: my 3800's discharge over 4200 every time so don't assume lower capacity paks are no good for mild mods down to 4.5t

DragonFire: after a 5 minute run with the 3.5T and IP3800, what would you estimate the lipo temp to be? and also the motor temp? what gear ratio etc?

This whole season I've ran a Trinity 7900Kv with Orion 4800 LiPo.
Sweeeeet! Plenty-O-Power and I'll never go back to NiMhs.

I have a Speed Passion 3.5R which has yet to see 6 cell or lipos and I had settled on the IP3800s.
Its comforting to know that I wont be killing the lipos with my setup!

Just curious, what size is the track you run on?

I'm soon starting racing with 7.4V lipos and 10.5 brushless (1/10 Touring)

Any tips or ideas for what gearing I should start off with? Track is outdoor with 80 foot straight.

I and lots of our Team Drivers run the IP3800 with great results in many classes in racing. There also very cheap for a great racing lipo.......

Rubber tires I would start at 5.0 gear and check temp.. That should get you with in 1 tooth....

IMHO, it looks like the IP3800 packs are shaping up to be the pack of choice amongst racers. A lot of racers I know are settling on these packs and from the things that I've read in forums etc, it looks like my local experience is being mimmicked around the world.

Maybe someone could clarify this bit though...
I have been told that bence tests show the IP3800 to pull just as hard as the Orion 30C 3800 packs, with capacities reaching 4200.
My understanding on what I've read about this is that the Intellect has deliberately underrated both their C ratings and capacities..

Would this be the case?

-----

Now onto the next topic.. Motors!

I have been racing 5 cell mod with an LRP 3.5 motor and have found very good pace with this setup. One of the other drivers here races an LRP 5.5 with 6 cell (club rules allow for both). Now my experience has been that we can both be just as fast as each other, that is the power we have at our fingertips seems to be roughly the same.

With the approvals of lipos and a return to 6 cell for mod (at least here in Australia, vote has just been passed by AARCMCC) I am very interested to find a motor that suits short carpet track use, but isnt overpowered under lipos/6 cell.

Has anyone come across any nice comparable setups like the 3.5/5CELL vs 5.5/6CELL ??
