i drive a zamboni at work and they have studded tires so im thinking you need them for your car as well. always wanted to do that at work but never have time to do it lol

3 years ago we ran 4wd Off-Road cars during our ice festival. We found, plenty of screws in the rear, and very few up front seemed to work the best. As mentioned earlier.

Be sure to clean your car that night after the event, otherwise all the screws, cvd's and bearings will be rust junk within a few days!

I'm just going to drag this one back up to show what we've been up to.

We contacted few manufacturers and Todd mattson of Proline racing stepped up and donated 4 Traxxas Slash buggies to run (one as a spare).

Here's a video - not exactly onroad but we're an onroad club (I hope this works):

I`ve tried driving Tamiya tt01 on ice, just get small screws, screw through the rim from inside. And you can archieve really good traction, great speed too.

While you can't see it, the tyres are studded with brass thumbtacks. There's about 100 per car and they get pretty good traction considering they are rear wheel drive. 4WD buggies would not need studs at all. Srtill, I'm not complaining. If it wasn't for Todd from Proline donating the Slash buggies it wouldn't have happened at all. I can't thank Todd enough for that.

My first thought on tyres would be shumacher narrow minipins U6671, these are the yellow compound, they do a harder blue compound too.

I'm not too sure on availability your side of the pond though....

This is my first year ice racing real cars. I have been racing Rc for 6 years. Love it but the chance to experience the racing while I was in the drivers seat was irrereistable. There is lots of viseo on youtube on this and more info at www.casc.on.ca.

Congrats to the Ottawa club for finding a way to bring our fun hobby to the wider community.

BTW, handling info I have seen so far that is useful on ice. VERY soft tires front and harder on the rear was a very good start. ie 18lb front and 30lb rear. Not much else that can be changed to improved handling beyond tires and tire pressure. front toe but unconvinced that toe has much effect in a very lo traction scenario.

We'll be running again tonight (I think we've run three times since I posted that video) but tonight Ottawa are playing against Toronto so we'll have a spoiler car in the mix decked out in Leaf colours. It's only job is to take out (or body check) the other cars.

I really bumped this topic up as I wanted to post a photo of one of our racers from the last race. NHL rules stipulate that if anyone goes on the ice they have to wear a helmet. Makes for an interesting photo:
