Lithium Poly Batteries - The future of R/C!

Anyone get the new Xtreme RC Cars magazine? Well in it they have an article about Lithium Poly 8000mah batteries, they're definetly going to be the future of R/C. They did a head to head test with the lithium poly cells against GP3300's, here are the results...

Li-Po weight: 287g
GP3300 weight: 366g

Li-Po run time: 20 minutes
GP3300 run time: 6 minutes

Li-Po acceleration (0-60 feet):1.67 seconds @ 39.8mph
GP3300 acceleration (0-60 feet): 1.82 seconds @ 32.8mph

Li-Po top speed: 47.2
GP3300 top speed: 41.2
What does everyone think?

soon i hope!:D
ill definetly get some asap.

cHckbOY5 08-28-2003 01:08 AM

i kno... 20 min runtimes

Price?

should be expensive...what u guys think?

analyzer 08-28-2003 01:10 AM

i think ifmar should revise their rule once the batteries is available on the market.....20 min heat instead of standard 5 min :D

FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD IN HK SOME RACES HAVE 8 MIN MAINS.

WON'T 20 MIN TAKE TOO LONG? YOU MIGHT BURNOUT YOUR MOTORS.

cHckbOY5 08-28-2003 01:16 AM

man so many things can happen in those 20 mins... cars arent gonna make it

trf racer 08-28-2003 01:21 AM

hhhmmm, the thing is so many clubs race just stock like mine it wudnt b worth it bcause we already have so much runtime we wont need any more.
but how a bout a 20min final with mod down to 8d.that way ud have to control ur pace until perhaps the last 1min or so.:D :D :D

I THINK YOU WOULD NEED ANOTHER CHARGER FOR THAT. I DONT THINK STANDARD CHARGERS WOULD WORK.

IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE LONGER RUN TIMES/RACES.

They really shouldn't cost anymore than a quality pack of matched 1.17's. The batteries they used were designed for laptops and cell phones.

That's correct, a charger specifically for NiMH or Nicad's won't work, however the article did say that the Great Planes Triton charger will infact work with these batteries. (http://www.towerhobbies.com/products.../gpmm3150.html)

Keep in mind, this article was just about the future of R/C, do not expect to see these batteries in stores for at least a few more years. By the time these batteries are released to the R/C masses, i'm sure there will be new motor and car technology or something.

I also should mention, the article stated 20-30 minute runtime, it was just the statistics part that said 20 minutes.

They also tested with a Hacker brushless system. They did mention that a standard brushed motor probably can not handle the abuse of Lithium Poly batteries. They seemed impressive...I would like to see it in person though. I know those batteries will not fit very well in my Xray. The cars will have to change as well...also you can't dump the Lithium cells as they can not handle a very low voltage...you'll destroy the cell structure.
