Default Did I blow up my esc?

I have a orion 3600 lipo and mamba max esc

when I went to plug the lipo into the esc the connectors made a few sparks and got instantly hot - so hot that all the solders came undone. The battery was kinda warm afterwards - but the cells didnt puff.

Im guessing this is some kind of a "short". The esc was on when I plugged the lipo - do you guys think I damaged my lipo or esc

havnt tried to run the lipo or esc again yet

Sounds like you might have plugged your LiPo in backwards, reversed the polarity. This would cause the issue you described. Also, a wire to your ESC, motor or battery, may have been touching another wire or was grounded. If the ESC was previously working, than I doubt it suddenly blew for no reason.

happened to me with a nimh battery aswell and my battery was just bad. the whole esc went up in smoke and it was very hot like yours was. either the battery was plugged wrong or the battery is bad most likely

Did the magic smoke come out? This may sound wierd but smell the esc, if it has a burnt smell then you've fried a fet or two and even if the esc did'nt smoke it will most likely fail very soon.

The esc didnt smoke or have a burnt smell, but teh battery had a burnt smell - where the chip and plugs are. -

do ou guys think the battery would be safe to use - cells didnt puff - and it takes a charge just fine

depends where the short was. if it was in the plug your ESC is safe. if it happened in the ESC or the polarity was switched it's run out of smoke...

+1 !!!

wstuart, try plugging in a different battery, with certain (correct) polarity, into you MM. Perhaps it was a fluke. Some electronics are built in with protection diodes, to protect them from reverse polarity. However, that may not account for the heat.

Cheers!

doubt it, you might have melted something inside, like the plastic part, but you can try it out. if it does work, your esc might go bad sooner than you think.

Reading this reminds me of advice I give customers, at the car audio shop I work at, when they call with problem with amps or subs. I say, "did you let the smoke out?"
