Well I've bought about 6-Novak motors to date, and each has had the timing ring in a slightly different position, so I don't think the timing ring is keyed to a specific spot on the end bell. I would post this question in the thread for Steve Weiss, he works at Novak and could answer this question with certainty.

There are pictures and an explanation in the "Ask Steve Weiss" thread. He has pictures of the base setting,as well as advanced.

Just click on the paperclip on the forum view and it'll bring up the pictures in the thread.

Those pictures are reversed...First pic is advanced...Second is factory.

Armature rotation is clockwise from this end of the motor; so, advancing the timing is counter-clockwise.

I've had and/or still do have most of 'em....and for real, the Roar-approved SP13.5's & Hacker's are the best in my opinion. The LRP X-11 Stock Spec's, Peak Racing, and Novak's are strong performers though. I've only have Tekin's mod motors, so can give an educated opinion on their 13.5's. Losi & Orion- I haven't had.
Hopefully that helps
