i'm not sure myself actually. wild guess but it's because its a flat pan chassis? i guess they called them that when the first tc's came along with their strange chassis shapes (not sure in the name, but like a struck through letter I)?

wild guess i know, but its the best i could make up!

Pan reference is a result of the 8th scale chassis having 4 wheel independent suspensions with double deck chassis. They came up with the term to differentiate the 4 wheel independent suspension 4wd 8th scales from the predecessors, the 8th pan class...

Pan classes are identified now with the solid axle and independent front suspension, with the power plant attached to the same piece of chassis that the rear axle is attached to.

That is my close approximation from what I can recall. I'm sure that one of the curators of internet RC history will be by in the next day or two to straighten everything out.

it's ligtht, low CG and big motor, direct drive, RWD, 2WD in it. It's fast, and many pro drive it fast.

the 1/12 scale pan is like the F1 car. 600miles per hour speed when scales it up.

the downside is you need a very smooth surface to run it, like indoor or some pro track.

From what I hear 12th scale racers are worse than Mac owners.

In Florida we run 1/12th on road on parking lots all the time. For the bumpy parking lots you just have to raise the ride height to ~4.5mm from the normal smooth track 3.5mm.
