hi Everyone,

Glad this is coming up for discussion. We will not be allowing heating devices for warming or heating batteries. There is no need to do this and it will not be allowed. When you bring your car up to tech we will test the Lipo pack and it must be 8.44v or less. if it is greater than that, you will not be allowed to progress further through tech. you will need to discharge it so it reaches the allowable voltage. And saying that you are stuck in tech because your battery is in excess of this range is not a reason for me to hold up the race.

And to those guys that are going to bring their car up and say test this and it is high, then they bring it back again and say how about now and it is still high, then come back a moment later and say test this now, This is not going to play. Come to tech with your equipment ready to race according to the rules and all will run smooth.

Thanks guys,
Scotty

Warmed batteries won't necessarily show a higher resting voltage, but will hold a higher voltage under load. It might be worth considering teching the temp of the battery somehow. Disallowing the relatively safe heating of packs with an external source is understandable, but without heat tech, people will find an advantage in discharging at 35A and then immediately charging the packs back up at 12A, as this appears to hold in heat. This is detrimental to the longevity of the battery, and potentially very dangerous. The technique was pioneered by one of the event sponsors (SMC) and outlined in detail in their thread on this forum. This ruling seems to discourage the safe way of heating packs, and encourage the much more dangerous way.

Sorry to bring up a controversial issue, I know nobody likes to hear about this stuff. I don't mean this as a complaint about the ruling, just a bit of concern in general. Thanks for your consideration.

Syndr0me, why are you trying to lipo block us? I know you, me and the dl show are going to use lipo (did he admit that to you yet or is he still too ashamed , I also have the nimh leader going to try lipo now also, he said)

Better question is when are all these rules like the no shirts in amature class and no warming lipos going to be released somewhere? If people had not brought them up in this thread how are we soposed to know about them?

So the only lipo rule is it has to be under 8.44 volts?

I can take and discharge my pack at 35amps then, dead short it, then put it in the warmer and charge it at 12 amps and it will still be under 8.44 since the gfx pulls them off at 8.40 volts. (yes we really did that tuesday night you would have been proud of me, it was an accidental dead short )

FMA Direct has sticker thermometers that when they reach a 130F they turn black.

The only issue I see with that is that and temping the LiPo's in general is to get a 100% accurate temp you have to temp the cells and not the case, so if your case says 130 for example you can "under normal circumstances" believe that the cells them self are a higher temp like say 138-145.

I think it would be very hard to enforce it IMO
