It called Supply-Chain Management.

Getting the product from ore to shore with consideration for price, timeline and quality.

The farther up the chain that alterations to a product-line the potential increases for a better profit margin, faster delivery and controlled quality.

It the case that was pointed out, pretty much just the label is changed. This label should not affect quality, profits or the risk a delays in the production cycle.

It has been convenient since companies started to rebadge products because I pretty much buy a product based on customer service.....

Especially electronics.....

That is engineering for you... Coping and stealing ideas. Sometime buying identical pieces.

Volvo S40 = Mazda3 = Ford Focus (gasp!) as far as vehicle platform/chassis goes.

As far as engine goes, not so much.

I guess what i want to know is why and how?
This is nothing NEW in any industry - and certainly not NEW to R/C.

I think the biggest difference now is that with the Internet, it's easier to market a product WORLD WIDE where in years past a lot of product marketing was done more to a local market...so a lot of markets didn't know the same product was sold someplace else with a different name.

Something else I've seen in different industries is - rebadging a 'out of date' product, and targeting a NEW target market.

...another US sold auto that fits the rebadging is Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe

But there are several others, who use basically the same car with a slight variation in trim pieces.

Things are headed towards a return of the SWT Series, but for
2017 the focus will be on the Encino Velodrome (and dirt oval racing)

Exclamation How the Market System Works: Economics 101 for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Quote:
Now that we have a good background on how the market system developed (see "The History of the Market System"),
it is important to take a look at how the market system of today works.
To do this, we will look at four important concepts—
that of the factors of production, supply and demand,
comparative advantage,
and the circular flow.

You're so wrong. Rebadging is not the same as platform sharing. Yes, these vehicles share a platform, but are not simple 'retrims' or 'rebadges'. Imagine if you took the 2 cars apart, and subtracted one for each part that is a duplicate and put them in a pile, one 'common' and one'unique'. You would probably end up with a pile of parts much larger for unique, and most likely the 'common' pile will be stuff that is generic.

Some are just so off base with thinking that certian items are just relabled. All those cars pictures are a good examples.

Platform engineering falls under what I posted above. Supply Chain Management.

Trust me, the engineers did not want to make those platforms universal between several models. A true engineer is willing to design from the ground up for uncompromised perfromance. Platforms are ways that management can reduce cost and spew out more different models very fast. The engineers were given that task to develolp a solution for the ideas that come from Supply Chain Management.

The Vibe and Matrix go far beyond smple platform sharing. They're just reskinned versions of the same car. Once you get the outwardly visible andf obvious parts off everything left goes into the "common pile". They're even produced in the same plant...
