That happened to me once, it would cut on the back srtoke. It ended up to be my bit that was messed.

i have a hudy lathe as well and with a diamond bit. might wanna check the plastic white strips that help guide the cutting blocks. they might be worn out or slightly warped.

check if yer ball bearing guides are squared against the base of the cutting block.

Thankgodness I've got a vguide hudy lathe.
Well, the bad thing about the Hudy lathe is the back-stop adjustment screw. I needed to add something on the screw so it could stop the bit from accidentally hitting the wire. Other than that, everything is the world class.
