I know it might be said here before but what is a good starting gearing for the 13.5 with rubber tires, thanks.

Running the Sphere TC spec. And again the same results last night. I even was nice and started the gearing at 3.64. Motor came off at 230º << Probably trashed the rotor again after that. Novak same gear came off at 158º So I was able to take it up to 3.5 and get it to come off at 170º. Not sure whats up but running out of ideas. I have not even started working on my 13.5 yet. <<It has the same problem. Any ideas would be great.

In general I would start off around 4.8 FDR range than temp it after 2-3 minutes. If it is in the low 100's then take it up a couple teeth to about 4.65 FDR. And again after a couple minutes temp it. You want to run your motor in the 160-175 max range. Once it reads around 160º after a couple minutes. Run it for the full five and retemp if you are above 175º back down a tooth or two.

Just got my 10.5 Hacker motor and wondered how to gear it compared to a Novak 10.5?
Thoughts please!

Denver,
What size track are you gearing the 17.5 at a 3.64? Is it asphalt, carpet, rubber or foam? Novak and Hacker motors are going to be geared differently. Unless you are running on a large open track I would say you may be geared too high. At the recent On Road Nationals I was running the Hacker 17.5 with a Sphere TC. 140' straight with a full sweeper into another full straight. I was geared right around where are you running and used setting #5 on the esc. Plenty of speed and temps around 175*.
10.5 gearing. I would start around a 5.0 and go up or down depending on track size and motor temp.
13.5 gearing. I would start around a 4.5 and go up or down depending on track size and motor temp.
If you follow this method a 17.5 would start around a 4.0 and go or up down depending on the mentioned variables.
Worst case scenario I would send the motor back to Kyle for a complete inspection.

I am running on a 60 x100 indoor carpet track. I am running both Foam and Rubber. But for this testing and such I am in my rubber car. I agree with you. I did start with proper gearing. The motor worked great for a few months then started getting hotter and hotter. Yup looks like I should send both motors back with the new rotors to have tested and diagnosed. Thanks

hey guys,
I got a 6.5 today at the track and someone suggested a starting ratio of 6.2
The motor came off at 175, so I backed it down one tooth and the temperature went up ?!? it was at 185.
I tried various things today, but couldn't get the temp below 180 at any point (192 was the highest)
I started at 6.2 with around 20 degrees of timing, but ended up at 6.8 with 0 timing (Speed Passion GT ESC)
Motor temps were as follows:
Run 1: 178
Run 2: 185
Run 3: 192
Final 1: 188
Final 2: 129 (broke something so I didn't finish)
Final 3: 185
There was about an hour between heats and I ran a cooler on it between heats to make sure it was cold.
The track and weather were very hot today though, so I'm hoping it was just that.
I was wondering if there's a gearing starting point for the 6.5 ? I have a Speed Passion 6.5 and I've never managed to get this above 150.

I'm kinda curiuos as to why you were changing the timing and gearing everytime??? that kinda defeats the purpose doesnt it? I personally would get my gearing down first before ever attempting to advance or retard timing. Not a flame just curiuos....could be part of your problem.

The timing was set on the ESC for my other 6.5 motor, so I left it for the first run. After that I set it to 0 and went on gearing alone.

Chris,
I have never personally run the SP esc so im not 100% sure whats going on.
I would first start by setting the ESC 0 degrees as you have done.
I would then check the timing of the motor. You can loosen the 3 screws on the back and rotate the timing ring counter clockwise to advance the timing.
Start by setting the timing on the motor all the way advanced then pull it back just a touch.
what type of track are you running on? Asphalt, carpet, open, tight?
6.2fdr sounds a little high for a 6.5T motor im just comparing that to what we run with a 10.5T. Normally a 5.0FDR is a good starting point for the 10.5. Droping 4 winds will need a little more change then that.
If you cant figure it out please contact our repair department and you can send it in. [email protected]
Thanks,

Kyle,
Thanks, I'll try the motor timing this weekend and let you know how I get on. Admittedly, I didn't check it out of the box, but I haven't changed it either, I tend to change timing on the speedo rather than the motor.
The track was open and on asphalt (Here's the layout)

Me too !!
It was a one-off visit for a regional meet. It's about 2.5 hours drive from where I live, so not really any chance to go there other than for these big meets.
