Danny,
When you are cycling packs do you balance while charging? Or just charge and discharge through the power leads? I guess my point is to find out if there are any signifigant differences in a balanced cycle vs. an unbalanced cycle on the GFX.

I don't think the balance connector/plug can handle that much current.

Danny?

Balance charge is good to do once in awhile but it's not needed everytime you charge. When I cycle using the GFX and don't use the balancer.

I have seen a small improvement in pack performance by balance charging and I have over 10 cycles on a pack that was balance charged once a regular charge for the next 10 or so cycles and the numbers have stayed the same.

Danny?
If you look at the high power adapters that are sold for this balancer you can see that they removed the outer black and outer red wire and attached these to a Deans male plug which then goes straight to the packs power leads. With this setup you can charge up to 6 amps and I have used it at 5 amps with good results.

I would not use this balancer without the high power adapter or modifying the adpater that comes with it.

Hello Danny,

I just wanted to say hi and tell you I just bought my first lipo pack; SMC 4000mha. The MAIN reason I bought your pack, besides the great "C" rating(which I did not even know what that was until reading about it here), was because you are here and I think the info you share with us in regard to Lipo battery technology is great. I appreciate your time here and thats why I will be purchasing more SMC batteries.

What type of balance tap comes on the 4000 pack?

Just a little update. I've got well over 50 runs on my 13.5 sedan. I run for 5 minutes, come in and put it back on the charger. No cycling or balancing. This thing is freakishly amazing each time. Danny, thanks for such a tough product.

Danny,

Any further word on the saddle packs ? The offroad ROAR nats is just a little ways away and I want to run your packs. It needs to be ROAR approved like your other packs, in order to run them.

Were still waiting on the casing to be done. We should have a test casing/pack in by the end of next week. If everything is o.k. we will go into production which means the packs should be available by the end of July if all goes as planned.

Hi Danny/SMC,
An interesting question was raised at my track recently, What is the maximum cell voltage imbalance in a lipo pack before it becomes dangerous?

Hi Danny,

The word occur is misspelled in the second to last paragraph in the instructions...

I'm not really sure but our supplier told me that our cells can be charged to 4.3v with no issues so I would say that .10 off would be o.k.. Based on some of the overcharge stories I have heard I'm pretty sure it could go even higher but the problem is that while one cell is overcharged they other cell will be undercharged.

I just got two 4000 packs and did some initial testing on charge methods. Here are my findings.

Method 1- Charge/Discharge straight through the power leads no balancing at all.

Pack#1
Charge-4089
Seconds-2790
Discharge-4112
Seconds-423
Average Voltage-7.30
Resistance-7.8

Pack#2
Charge-4126
Seconds-2833
Discharge-4093
Seconds-421
Average Voltage-7.30
Resistance-8.2

Method 2-Balanced charge (interface mode)

Pack#1
Charge-4178
Seconds-4906
Discharge-4102
Seconds-422
Average Voltage-7.29
Resistance-8.4

Pack#2
Charge-4171
Seconds-4784
Discharge-4073
Seconds-419
Average Voltage-7.28
Resistance-8.7

Method 3-Discharge pack to 6v then balance cells using a soft discharge (typically .10 to .12 amps)

Pack#1
Charge-4125
Seconds-2886
Discharge-4122
Seconds-424
Average Voltage-7.32
Resistance-7.3

Pack#2
Charge-4067
Seconds-2747
Discharge-4083
Seconds-420
Average Voltage-7.33
Resistance-6.9

All tests were done using CE GFX and a Great Planes Equinox Balancer. Charges were at 6 amps and discharges were at 35 amps.
