Ok, wondering if you could help me out. Have a 5000 and an ICE. What are the steps of use? Using NiMh, I would charge at 8amps, run, discharge, equalize, cool down and charge again.

After reading through this thread, it sounds like the steps are: charge at high amps if you don’t have a method of warming after charge, run, discharge at 35 amps, cool off and charge preferably with a balancer to allow for release of overflow charge to the shorter cell(s).

It sounds as though balancing is more of an option than a requirement and the charge rate is not held to the 1amp per 1000 mah. However, in looking at JimmyMac posts, his second pack is starting to take less of a charge. Granted, sounds like he gave them a workout, but is going through a forced cycle (35amp discharge/12amp charge) going to decrease overall life and mah capacity?

Danny, sounds like you have been trying both with the main intent on keeping the pack warm before use. For a person like me who is planning on running this pack not only through the summer (5 to 10 runs a week at least) but preying they can last through vegas, would I be correct in saying 5amp charges will allow the pack to stay as fresh as possible to vegas?

Sorry for the long post and multiple questions, but I’m stoked to run a product like this! HELLO POWER!!! Wooooo Ha!

Thank you!

Please check again because we tested this charger and after 3 to 4 min the lipo battery drop a little. when we use hyperion the power from the start to end is the same.

Everyone's got their opinions, but I for one really like the Core UDC-20, it'll charge almost ANYTHING & can balance packs from 2S through 6S(I believe, personally I don't need anything more than 2S balancing, since I only use 2 cell packs), & the SMC packs' balance plug is the same as the UDC-20 uses, so you don't even need an adapter. I've been using it a few weeks now & I'm really liking it......

I've also heard that you can 'trick' a charger (ice or checkpoint) by lying about the number of cells to achieve a higher charge rate (no gfx for me yet). Also wondering if a slow charge would be of any benefit?

thanks!

+1 on the Core UDC-20. It's great, and super easy to use.

Casey lets say you want to charge at 8 amps on an ice, tell the charger you have an 8000mah pack.

I have been using 8amp charge on my gfx for my smc packs with great results.

Every once in a while i cycle them for kicks, but on race day all i do is repeak, no warming or whatnot.

sweet, thanks Mike! I was planning on just re-peaking between runs, but all this talk of 35 amp discharges and 12amp charges got me all turned around.

Any chance you would run a night with us at rce sometime?

I use the BLOODY ICE and there is no need to "trick" the charger into high amp rates. Its default setting is 1C and its default max setting is 2C.

So for my 5000mah pack i say 5000mah and the charge amp rate goes to 5amps. But if you want more you just dial it up to 10amps.... On a pack like a 3200 then yes if you want 8amps then you will need to at least cal it a 4000mah pack..

I run my 5000mah at 8amp charges between runs. Its been great so far.

In my testing I see that heating the pack up prior to using it in the car is what makes the pack run at its maximum. By charging at a higher rate you will reduce your charge time and it may increase the temp of the pack just a little which will yield a bit more power. You could achieve better results by warming up the pack prior to using it in the car.

When using balancers you need to be careful as some of them will not charge the pack correctly as the balancer will create extra resistance which will give the wrong voltage reading to your charger. Example: I use the Equinox by ElectriFly and to use it you need to plug your charger into the Equinox then plug the balancer into your balance plug. The maximum amps that most balance connectors can handle is 3 amps which is kind of low for a 5000 pack. Since I use a GFX I have seperate voltage sensing leads. When I attache the leads on where I plug the GFX into the balancer I was getting a higher voltage reading then when I hooked up the leads straight to the pack. This is normal as the balancer and the balance connectors have resistance. So if I were to use this balancer with a charger that doesn't have seperate voltage sensing leads then it would never charge the pack to it's full capacity. To me balance charging in theory is good but not something that must be done and if it's done you should check the voltage of the pack and the voltage your charger is dispalying to make sure it's the same. If it isn't this is due to increase in resistance by the balancer.

Here is what I do to my packs and it seems to work very well. I use the Equinox balancer by itself. This means I plug my pack into it by the balance conenctor and then balance the pack so both cells are the same. By doing this my packs stay well balanced and it allows me to charge through the power leads at the charge rate I want to use.

Danny: Thanks for the response, I really appreciate it. So if I want to do this the technically 'perfect' way I would: balance then charge (5amp), warm up then run. Cool down, Ballance and charge ...... many thanks.

Mike: YES! The new lights are in and it's SO bright! Kenny and I had painted the walls and we got mad comfortable rolling office chairs for the pits, add to that our new heating.... well, you get the idea.

thanks to you both!

Yes that will work well. There is no need to let the pack cool down prior to charging it back up as charging at 5 amps the pack will cool down while charging.
