They are toxic waste, DO NOT put them in the regular rubbish, they need to be disposed of properly, ie. not into a landfill

Home Depot, Frys, Best Buy, Radio Shack and I'm sure others all have boxes for collecting old batteries. Best Buys is bins by the front door. Homedepot keeps theirs in the tool area. Ask around.

As mentioned before Lowes also takes batterys for disposal as well. Theres is right inside the returns areas right as you walk inside the store. Also check around you local hobby shops. My local shop takes batteries for disposal at the front counter. You can't dispose of them at a landfill mainly because of the acid that breaks down over time and would seek into the ground creating another superfund site. (Read Toxic waste dump..)

How do I know which rechargeable batteries can be recycled?

If itís rechargeable, itís recyclable! The following rechargeable battery chemistries can be recycled - Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead* (Pb). Rechargeable batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, digital cameras, two-way radios, camcorders, and remote control toys. Look for the Battery Recycling Seals on the battery. The RBRC program does not accept alkaline or non-rechargeable batteries.
