3.9fdr for a sedan isn't that unreasonable... that's what we gear a 13.5 with a 13mm rotor around. heck, i've run a 13.5 with the standard rotor at 4.4 before with 0 problems. it was actually even cooler than usual at the end of the run.

My TC is a direct drive w/IRS. It has a 17.5. Current gearing is 3.1 w/6cell nimh,wt. is 46oz. Am I in the ballpark? ( I've yet to run it, it's kinda cool outside-10 degrees) Thanks, Don

So without using a fan on the motor when running the car on the track, what temperature is too hot for a B\L motor? Do you think a B\L motor can take more gear as long as it stays cool? I'm assuming running a fan on the motor will help alot?

In my oval touring car I ran the novak 17.5 at the same final as a stock brushed motor. Motor was at 65 degrees at the end of 4 min. 9 teeth later I got the temp up to 140 degrees and it was gettin pretty quick then. From what I understand 170 degrees is about as hot as you wanna get these motors before it starts to eat the goodie out of the rotor. I'm no expert in it at all, this is just what I have been told and read. Gear them by temp? Xtremes article on BL motors said they had infinate torque just dont get them hot. Thats what I'm going with.

This past weekend, I ran my 17.5 in rubber tire at a fdr of 4.02. This left me with a rollout in the 49.25 range. The motor felt really good at this gearing, but the motor was very cool. It only tempt at like 120-130 degrees after a 5min race, including 3 or so practice laps. So I went up a tooth to put myself at 3.92 fdr and a rollout of about 50. This moved the motor temp up to about 134-135, but the motor felt very soft. No real punch to speak of.

Now, I went through a similar thing with the 13.5 when I ran that. When geared to a certain point, it lost its punch, but when geared past that, it hit a sweet spot in the rollout where it had both punch and top end.

So I'm wondering will the same hold true for the 17.5. I've reached the soft point, but still haven't made it to Novak's recommended heat for proper gearing. So I'm wondering if its time to try a fdr in the 3.8 range and a rollout in the 51 range, to get to that magic sweet spot like the 13.5 achieved.

I guess I'll try it this weekend.

Darkseid - What ESC are you using? NIMH or LIPO?

Were you running with any 27T racers? How did the 17.5 compare to the 27T?

Thanks for the info.

I have been running a 17.5 novak motor at cefx in my tc for about a week im at 93 spur and 49 pinion with fdr of 3.80 in my tc5 good top speed and corners very well the faster drivers will do better with this and a avg is going to do great because it is controlable speed
nothing like a 13.5
I am also racing with 13.5 motors and in some cases beating them not on speed just on less crashes and more consistent lap times

it would be hard pressed to get up to operating temp at our track right now it was 45 degrees in the track room and 60 in the pit room and this is only tennessee. that's the only thing bad about finding a temp to run at when you go otside in the sun it will get hotter and you 'll have to change the gear and slow down to keep the motor strong but not be as fast as you could be in the middle of a cold track in winter

I just ordered a novak 17.5

going to start out about a 3.0 or 76mm on my 12th scale

and probably 2.0 or 51mm on my touring

anybody been running them yet? or had access to the other companies.
On my 12th scale with a 13.5 this last weekend we ran 75mm rollout on a 95x48 track doing about 12.5 second lap times. If I had to guess I would assume 17.5 would be up into the high 80's

And Sedans forsure into the 50's

I'm running LRP Sphere w/ Orion 3200 Lipo.

No, we weren't running with any 27t racers, our track has pretty much gone all BL for all classes. Except for TCS mini.
