I suppose...

Then it's a matter of which one:

The cool enough looking '68-9

The EXCELLENT looking '70 (hint hint, though I suppose it's late for that...)

Or the simply hideous '71-3 (the only Championship winning version...shudder)

A real lottery at this point, but I've called my painter guy and reserved a slot for late Feb. before our 2-day here JUST in case.

It would be easy enough (and more mileage out of the base mold) to do front and rear "caps" (and could get away with just the front) to do the '68-9 and the '70. Then for the '70 just add a "duck bill" spoiler and a hood bulge/scoop. Ah...excellence in a bag at that point.

Another 17.5 class...Ho Hum, Ho Hum. Kinda kidding Rob. No offense meant at all. I was hoping for 21.5 as they've become kind of the bastard motor. Isn't 17.5 GT style racing dead in most places ?

Donahue's car was a 70'...right? Gotta wonder when they look for a marketable decal set....what will sell. 71-74 wasn't ugly !! They were ...unique I actually liked the later models and owned a 71' AMX. Love it or hate it....you always got attention.

No worries, there might be a use for your "bastard" 21.5s soon.

Donohue (Penske's) FIRST year was the '70, and the "street" model (a la Challenger TA, AAR Cuda, Z28 Camaro, etc) was the Mark Donohue Edition. I haven't seen one of those in a LOONG time, a buddy had one when we were in high school in the late '70's.

Penske/Donohue then won the championship in '71 (actually hung new sheetmetal on the '70 cars) after everybody else had gone home AND Traco figured out how to get power AND life out of the Rambler.

Sorry, we'll have to agree that they're "uniquely ugly".

I think its a easy call....most ppl are running 17.5 stock spec TC as a second class already...so a change of tires and body and you are ready to race...jmo

and if you are like me...I run GT bodies in TC anyway...on Jaco Blues.....a set of X-patterns and we racing

Yep, thats the same answer i hear everywhere. Hell, down here in Florida the group running 17.5 VTA said the same thing when I e-mailed them and asked if they'd be adopting the current rules. Man....thank God the VTA directors didn't think that way. We're lucky, we got a unique situation not just once with 21.5 but twice with 25.5. Then again....I assume VTA drivers WANT to be the most unique crew in rc.
T'aint nuthin wrong with that !!

Could someone point me to a setup sheet for the Xray 008 for VTA? I have been searching all over, including the xray site, and closest I found was a set up sheet for T3-VTA OR a 008-17.5 sheet.

Rob,

Sorry, but I think you missed the boat on this one. Change the motor rule to 21.5 and you would have nailed it. We have a small GT class running at our track with 21.5 and here are some of the reasons it works:

1. Speed wise, there is a big gap between VTA and Stock Rubber TC. 21.5 GT fits nicely between the two.

2. 17.5 is too much motor for cars like the FF-03 and TA-05. Yes, they can handle this much motor, but when running against modern carbon chassis with 17.5, they can't hang. The FF-03 becomes pretty much non-competitive. This is big for us as these two chassis' are what we mostly run in GT at the moment.

3. Most of us have old 21.5 motors laying around. We run GT as a second class to 17.5 Rubber TC. We have big dollars wrapped up into our 17.5 cars and like the fact that GT doesn't require a $500 chassis. To quote a previous post, it's just another 17.5 TC class. 17.5 effectively eliminates any front wheel drive, bathtub or shaft drive car.

4. Your tire rule works but I would have just specified the tire with HPI belted X pattern. They work great and wear great.

Don't go soft on us man!

Respectfully
Andy James

I think a spec tire would be better also. A lot of vta guys traded the 21.5 for 25.5.

The 17.5 tc class is a easy transition for most racers .

Its a large class that will help fill the event. I still have 3, 21.5's.
And I'm good with any rules Rob comes with.

I will be there to get my BELT..

3rd place won't do this year

i agree..21.5 motor & some type of spec tire...but other the that all the other rules are cool....17.5 would just be another stock class...& everybody has a 21.5 motor...or @ least 90% still have 1
hope this helps

actually it's about $40 for xpattern and rims and you ahve to glue them up. jaco blues $29 nexus racing and you don't have to glue them. much better deal. everything else you say is valid.
