I have a few of those tamiya drivers on hand.
I think I have a few from the early 80's (sand scorcher) that
will look sharp in a ta car.
I am into scale so put me on the + side of this debate.

this might be a stupid question but how is the head mounted into the VTA body?

Hi, I mounted my driver out of my fx10 on a piece of a old grinding sheild lens. I put 3m bouble stick indoor out door thick tape, the red plastic over gray tape kind. I had to build it up a little. I never had a problem with it for 10 almost 11 months now.

I just screwed mine to the inside top of the body. I used a spacer to lower it down to a more realistic height. It works well because it's not in the way when I'm working on the chassis. But the screw head showing out the top is kind of ugly. Luckily, it's not really noticeable on the track, only in close-ups.

The third leg of the Asphalt Assault at Al's Hobby Shop in Elmhurst, IL was this past weekend. This particular race is just a once a year event in a pretty cool location. There were 4 full heats of VTA and pretty tight competitive racing by some of the best drivers in the Chicagoland area. It was a ton of fun. We got 3 rounds of qualifying in with a resort for the third round. As it turns out, that third round was actually the main because the storm clouds moved in and ended the day early. It was still a great event. The efforts of the organizers, the sponsers and prizes really made it an event worth attending!

I have a 4-40 threaded aluminum stand off screwed to the heat sink on the LRP speed control with the driver mounted to the other end. There is a small hole in him to access the program ports for teching the profile level.

A few drivers from Indy made our way up to the Asphalt Attack this past weekend. Other than the rain late in the day, it was a awesome event. Grip was excellent and the layout was great with a little bit of elevation change on the course. IIRC there were 25 VTA entries. Well worth the trip!!

----------

I recently stumbled across some Nascar Helmet Pez dispensers (http://www.pez.com/products/index.ph...=tertcat&ID=44). The helmets are a bit larger than 1/10 scale. However, they are painted and the helmet is easily removed from the dispenser. This is the cheapest option I've found so far for a scale racing helmet.

The best way I've seen to mount the drivers head so far is to vecro it to the roof. This Tamiya driver's head (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLDW5&P=Z) has a hole in the top of a head for a mounting screw.

A simple solution is to take a decent sized piece of lexan/plastic and attach it to the top of the driver's head with a screw. Attach velco to the lexan/plastic "base" above the driver's head. Then attach velcro to the inside roof on the R/C car body. This solution allows you to easily remove the driver if you like to use different bodies.

Our club does not run driver figures, but my $.02 is they look really, really bad without a full interior or at least some type of floor pan interior. Seeing a head or drive figure "floating" above electronics and wires is not scale guys. Sorry.

Granted, I did have to drive a truck once that had a 5 gallon bucket for a seat (that was interesting, to say the least) but I didn't have a motor, spools of wiring, a drive shaft, and a huge battery in the cab with me.

My club is taking a bit of a summer break.... I'm dying to race! Bashing my Slash just doesn't hold the same fun for me as racing my VTA and my mini.
