ACTUALLY the Crawler 21.5 has EXACTLY the same performance characteristics as the SS 21.5. Exactly the same kv, exactly the same wattage because the cans (windings) and rotors are, ta da, exactly the same. The difference is that the SS motor has a temp sensor to prevent overheating (shutdown) where the Crawler version has a diode in that line instead that signals Novak's Goat brushless crawler esc that it can engage "crawler" mode for stuff like hill-holding brakes, etc. This information comes from perusing Novak's online catalog and a lengthy conversation with a couple of their techs on the phone after a guy here on RC Tech palmed a couple Crawler motors off on me.

The Crawler COULD be used for club-level racing with absolutely no performance difference. Overheating is a non-issue with the allowed rollout minimum. The only caution is that the most recent Havok esc's actually send a signal looking for the temp sensor in the motor and won't power up if it's not present (disconnected wire as is fairly common, apparently, in 17.5 and 13.5 racing or the diode in the crawler motor). Apparently the Havocs, with their much lighter heat sinks, were being damaged by overtemp issues when the temp sensor was disconnected so it was modified to only work if it could find a temp sensor. The Crawler motor DOES work on pretty much any other esc, though you wouldn't just go out and buy one because the Crawler spec motor actually costs a few bucks more.

At the Nats (or clubs that are particularly anal) the Crawler wouldn't be allowed as the "spec" motor is identified by Novak's part number.

On a less tech-heavy note....

VTA weekend in Palm Bay, Florida!!!

Brevard Electric Auto Racers meet the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at the Space Coast Harley-Davidson. Just off exit 176 on I-95, we have electricity onsite, access to the dealership amenities (bathrooms) and our numbers are growing! We'll have a loaner car this weekend and we start building the track at 10am. Bring an ez-up if you have one and enjoy some good times running VTA!

liljohn:

Hi,

Clean the bearings in denatured alchohol and put in very light machine oil. The car should be extremely free rolling.
Put silver or blue springs on the front, green on the back. 40Wt oil front, 30 Rear, No 2 piston is fine for both.
Set ride height at 5 mm front, 5.5 in back.
Replace the front shock tower with a rear tower and use the body post holes to mount the top side of the front shocks.
Put the front camber link on the inside lower hole. Same for the back.
Set camber at 1.5 to 2.0 negative front, 1.5 negative in back.
Droop is 3 mm front, 2 mm back.

What are you running for rear toe?????

also what body???

Thanks for posting your setup. I'm going to try it out this weekend on one of the VTA cars I'm building.

Thanks for the info on the crawler motors. I found it interesting and maybe someday, helpful. I was wondering if you had a list of particularly anal VTA clubs. On second thought, please dont.

We are running the vintage tires on gt bodies at out track and the class has great success. Can someone tell me what tire warmers will fit the vintage HPI tires?

Thanks
