Just getting back into the rc scene after an eight year hiatus. Looking at possible motor and esc setups for my new FT TC4.

My question is with the esc. Should you run an esc with reverse? Why wouldn't you? Just wondering why they offer ones with and without, and what the advantages are?

Im all forms of rc racing using reverse is typically not allowed. Reverse is nice for practicing or just bashing around, but a forward only esc will provide better performance and allow you to use a lower turn motor normally. In a reverse ecs they split up the fets using some for forward and some for reverse. A forward only esc uses all fets for forward operation. Even on some of my brushless systems which will reverse, I never use it.

Reversing isn't allowed at some clubs/meetings, others allow it.

Our local club allows reversing, and I wouldn't consider running forward only.
Some of the racers at are club are fairly new to RC, and crash a lot. Without reverse, the marshals would be very busy! Even the top guys make the odd mistake, and reverse means they can back off the barrier without the help of a marshal - quicker and safer, as long as the stuck driver doesn't reverse into the path of another car.

Why not get a speedo with reverse lockout? Best of both worlds. Reverse for bashing/practice/local meetings, forward-only for when the rules dictate it.
My LRP speedos have reverse, but can be converted to forward-only with the press of a button.

go buy youself a nosram power missile you can lock reverse if you need to...you can gain a seconnd with forward only than a tidy mistake wait for the marshall 10 seconds..

Thanks for all the help guy's. I do want to compete this year, but I'm sure a lot of what I'll be doing is practicing in the parking lot. I'm going to go with a reverse esc with the lockout feature.

You can get great prices buying used as many of the people are going brushless and getting rid of their brushed ESCs

Revers isn't allowed, and i personally dislike all those who use reverse while sharing the same track as myself, wither in a race or just during a practice.

There is nothing like having a person reversing into you as your trying to go around the track.

It is YOUR fault that your car is stuck, walk out and get it. It is harder for someone to dodge a moving car then it is to dodge a car that has been crashed at the boards.

All in all? o to the local track and see what they say about it.

reverse in racing is a nono,u will always find racers backing into ur car,and always here this"sorry dude i didnt see u"

I don't know about you, but it is nice to have if just practice, and of course reverse only when traffic is clear

I find it easier to dodge a reversing car than trying to drive with a marshal running across the track.
