Default Axiom Motor Question

I've just purchased an Axiom Komodo-based motor to run in my tourer (XRay T2). I normally run the Trinity motor and gear it at 5.95 (24/84) on rubber tyres on a large outdoor track. Where should I gear the Axiom motor (same, higher, lower)? Are there any tricks to getting that bit more out of it?

Dave does a pretty good job at tuning his motors.
I would start at the same gearing you ran on the Trinity version and go from there.
You might need to go up or down a tooth depending on how you tuned your trinity version versus how Dave tuned it.

Thanks Dayton. I never really played with the Trinity, just ran it as it came out the packet except I've been using XXX brushes on it lately. I tried heavier springs but thought it slowed it down. It could have been my batteries.

Was it the standard or the "pro" version?

If it was the standard your new Axiom version should be much better.

I've been running the pro version. Wouldn't even bother with the standard version when there's not much difference in price between standard and pro.

I'll do comparison runs when I get the new arm I have coming for my Trinity next meet.

The xxx brushes will no doubt eat into the commutator a little quicker, so keep on top of the skimming. The pro version has all the tweaks done to it, so you're good to go

I used my new Axiom motor yesterday. Other car problems prevented me from comparing it with my Trinity motor over 5 minutes but I did record my fastest lap of the day with the Axiom motor. Got into the lead in one qualifier but I lost it when I made a mistake and then my front belt flipped over, resulting in partial 2WD. Both were geared the same (5.95:1).

I think I'll repeat my testing next meet when I have my drive train sorted out (all belts and pulleys replaced).

I used an Axiom Altas Blue 19 turn for the first time yesterday and I was impressed. I got my LHS who I race for to stock them as well, so I am glad they turned out well. Even with some now fairly tired EP4200 cells I still placed well in the A.

How hot can these motors get before the brushes start burning?

Where do I measure the temp? Can? Endbell?

Want to know how tall it can be geared before I start doing damage to it.

I have a question regarding the running of XXX brushes with this motor (or any other similar motor for that fact). I am using it in a 1:10 tourer on a large open track.

I was running the Trinity XXX brushes (TRI13506NT) in this motor and my other Komodo (the Trinity Pro version) I have. In the Axiom motor I was running the installed purple/purple springs. My other Trinity Komodo has the standard red/green springs.

I have been told that I need to use really stiff springs when running these brushes (silver/silver). Is this the case? Won't that just cause more drag and cause the motor to be slower?

A stiffer spring will actually give a little more rpm and a little less torque.

You could use a harder brush and spring: http://rctouring.eu/electric_motor_set_up.htm
