Decade old TC
 

Hey guys several years ago I ran this Roadrunner xpress that I bought at Ultimate Hobbies. Check out the Tekin esc (G9 I think). I charged up the nearly decade old 2000mah NIcd battery pack and took it out for a spin. What do you guys think about the chassis layout? It accepts either stick packs or saddle. The belt drive design looks similar to todays new cars well except the spur gear being in a higher position. The direct steering is quite interesting as well. Anyway I was excited to have found this at parents garage and equally excited that it still ran.

Can this still be competitive? Anyway still could be fun to share with nephew.

WOW oldschool, the high spur looks kinda like my old RS4 Pro2

i think u should just give it a shot at your local club.
imagine if your old skool car can give the T2-008s a run for their money .. there'll be some red faces at the end of racing :sneaky:

That's pretty cool. I wouldn't run it with a 19t, let alone mod, but I tell you what. If you have a track that runs silver can, throw a lipo in it, put on some good tires, a servo saver, and let it rip. I bet it balances like a champ and comes out real light to boot.

There should be an OLD SCHOOL class.

I remember that car! It was a decent car in it's day but it may struggle to be competitive today. Also, if you were to break it, it'd be very hard to find any replacement parts.

That car used to handle mod motors so there's no reason why it couldn't handle a 19t today.

I'd recommend getting a new battery though!

As already said; take it to your local club and have a laugh racing it. If it's not competitive you'll still have lots of fun as would your nephew. It might even spark a new found love for the hobby and lead to you buying a newer chassis.

Yea man the Xpress is a great car, I still have mine, and know a couple of guys who still have them from back in the day. One of the guys still races it every once and a while and he still kicks ass in it (granted he is a kick ass driver too) but yea take it to your local club and have some fun :D Just don't break anything haha.

I bought a Pro98 before, but i personally like more Alex's version.
I didn't purchase it, just because is so more expensive and there's no people around me run with this japanese version "Express", then could be a troublesome to find out spare parts.

BUT with a 19t it goes faster, so more chance of breaking it ;) silver can is nice and slow and light, so you've got less chance of breaking things.

Cool find... I remember those cars when they were new. You may want to take a little bit of time to clean it & re-oil the bearings at least. I would highly recommend some new tires too... if you decide to compete with it.

race it... its good fun if u do beat those guys with newer car. i have the oldest car on the track (corally C4.1), but i dont always get last... so its good just for fun.. plus, i use it for practicing atm before i get the tamiya 416:sneaky:

Isn't RCMart not the new manufacturer of the Xpress kits? I think this car has still enough potention to race against the newer cars on clublevel. Even modified;)

1996-97 I really wanted a Yokomo because of its high-quality build and unique chassis layout but I happened upon the Xpress and found it to be near its equal.

After 10 yrs the cf chassis looks incredible. I have never seen cf delaminate so I wonder if applying CA to the edges would be necessary?


The company I suppose changed hands or just names and might still have some spare parts for me. My first step is to replace basics ie tires, battery and motor but I am considering to stay with the G9 Tekin esc (I remember paying a bundle for it at HobbyShack -now Hobbypeople).

To race in a club level - I might be intimidated because its been years. I am still trying to catch up on the latest technology like NiMh batteries and such.
