5 km+ Radio Range!

Yep, 5 kilometer and more.
Does this exist? How far can a Spectrum radio reach or can I make the signal stronger?

This is for a project we are working on. It'll have to go 5 km's far (and back) with a temperature of -30°C.

More info will follow.

The best ive seen quoted is 2km for the GM 2.4ghz system

I know the military uses long-range radio-control equipment for their "Drone" planes. Whether we have access to that technology... no idea. Might give you a direction to look into.

well, with some simple maths and a bit of google you can get that kind of range off any radio! what you have to do, is work out how long the wavelength of whatever frequency you're on (say band 4, 27.145mhz i think) and cut a length of antenna wire (i seem to remember 10 ohms from somewhere) to that length (to the nearest millimetre though!) and your range should be hugely increased. of course, it limits how portable your radio is, but i guess if you need that kind of range it doesnt need to be too portable. of course, if space is an issue you may need a telescopic antenna support to attatch it to, or you can halve the length of the arial. and its still legal because you're still outputting the same power!

Does anyone know about a car on tracks exept for the Kyosho one?

It could be done BUT you have to modify your radio. Todays radio's are set to a 0,5watts output.

Or you can just change the antenna to a higher gain design. The R/C antennas are probably 0 dBi (no gain) antennas. A dish type can get you up to 25 dBi, but obviously are quite directional (no Omni directional here!). Several WiFi access points use 2.2 dBi omnis. Some dipoles are 6.6 dBi. I think that the Spektrum receivers use an industy standard Hirose U.FL connector.

The high gain dish antennas must be line of sight. So to cover 5Km, they would have to be on a very tall tower. And it is fairly tough to align them. Good luck.

or you could turn the antena into a bit of wire and make that 5km each way lol
