Default LRP Pulsar 3 - Need help

I have this charger and it does a great job on my lithium packs, but I am having serious issues with my NIMH. It won't charge my nimh that have been dead shorted. it basically says check battery and won't start the charge. If I didn't have another charger then I couldn't charge my packs at all.

Can anyone help me fix this. Or hook me up with someone that can.

I think the key word to your issue is you have DEAD batteries. So yeah, it will not detect anything if it does not sense it.

I don't know anything about the Pulsar 3 but I have 2 Pulsar 2's. Is there a NIMH setting and a seperate LIPO setting then there should be a NICAD or linear setting, right? If so, turn the amps all the way down and turn the delta peak all the way up and charge just long enought to get the batteries going to go back to NIMH settings!
Hope I was of some help?

it could be that you have discharged ur batss so low that the charger ont pick it up. leave it on trickle charge or get a buddie to charge them on his charger for a few min to get them up to a voltage where your charger can read it.

Is deadshorting cells still in fashion? Definitely not something I would recommend to anyone with modern NiMH cells!

Anyway, try to wait a few minutes (~15mins) after taking the dead-short wire off the battery before you start charging. If battery is ok (e.g. not damaged) the packs voltage should recover slightly and the Pulsar3 should start ok.

well that sucks, my orion carbon will start the charge without problem, i has a battery check it goes through and bam the charge starts. The pulsar won't even sniff a charge.

Sounds like the pack isn't recovering it's voltage - probably because deadshorting the packs is killing them. So I would say stop deadshorting, but in the mean time, to pick the voltage up so the Pulsar can detect the battery, plug in the pack, then turn on the motor run in for a few seconds and it should bring up the voltage enough to be detected.

If its a 6 cell pack your charging try putting the pulsar on 5 cell

If its a 5 cell pack your charging try putting the pulsar on 4 cell

This used to work with my much-more charger.

I had this happen with a brand new, out of the box, never charged pack too.

I had to break out my old Novak Millenium charger. I put it on the charger for about 5-minutes to get the voltage up, then I was able to charge it on my LRP Pulsar.

Do you have any older charger to use? At least just to get the charge started? What would also be good is a discharger that gives you a readout of the discharge for each cell, like the Trinity DPD. I use one on my NiMh packs and his help me identify weak cells.

I don't know what the point of having this charger is if it can't charge dead shorted packs. We find that the cells we are running are getting faster by dead shorting. I have even talked this over with danny at smc, and he says that it is pushing the envelope, but we are seeing a difference.

I do have a orion carbon charger that does a fine job charging them. But I like to do all of the charging on one charger, that way I have accurate charge info. It is not really a big deal, but they should have a long lockout of some sorts on the charger. I might play with the nicd mode to see if it will charge since, we always dead shorted the nicd's

Any charger that false reads a dead shorted pack or comes with no long lockout feature is junk to me. I bought the pulsar because I have been very happy with lrp speedo's in the past and heard great things about the pulsar's in the past. But I guess It will be my lipo only charger for the time being.

Better yet, why don't you use a LiPo pack for club racing. Keep your NiMh packs for large races where tech spec is done. I just started running LiPo for club racing, cheaper and easier to maintain.

I just need to know if there is a way to set the charger so it has a long lockout. or will charge a completely dead pack I don't need to know how to run my lipo 7.4volt pack in my 4 cell oval car????? anyways if anyone has found a way to charge dead shorted packs with the pulsar 3, then I want to know
