Default TSA to scrutinize remote-controlled toys

TSA to scrutinize remote-controlled toys

By EILEEN SULLIVAN

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Airport screeners will be taking a closer look at remote control toys in carry-on luggage due to concerns they could be used to detonate bombs, U.S. officials said Monday.

The new practice is not a result of a specific threat, according to the Transportation Security Administration. But authorities recently arrested two Florida college students who posted a video online with instructions on how to use a remote-controlled toy to set off a bomb.

Passengers - including children - carrying these toys may have to go through secondary screening.

"While not associated with a specific threat at this time, TSA is aware that remote control toys can be used to initiate devices used in terrorist attacks," according to Monday's press release. "Transportation security officers have trained on this possibility and travelers may encounter additional screening when bringing remote control devices in carry-on luggage."

Hey, if you arent a terrorist, it shouldnt be much of a headache. Get to the airport a little earlier, thats what I always do. If possible, UPS your gear to where you are heading, that way you wont be scrutinized as much. AND if UPS loses your stuff, what a claim!

They've actually never lost or damaged my stuff when I have pre-shipped my gear. Now USPS on the other hand, I wouldnt count on it if I had 100 fingers on one hand.

To me, this makes a whole lot more sense than not allowing water.

i've thought for YEARS it would be easy to use some toy grade electronics to set off a bomb. of course, you can still buy receivers for car keys that could set off a bomb....

Oh thanks!!!!!
Now with most of the newer car keys that have the remote built into them, we will have to check them in with our luggage, and you know they never LOSE your luggage!!!!

They are doing this because there are such things as liquid explosives too. Goes on the same principle when you were in school. The teachers think you are drinking water from that plastic bottle when you really have vodka in there.

I think this is a good move by the TSA, but realized much too late. Good thing something has not already happened.
