No, it is a soft shell like maxamps packs. They rate them at 22c as well.

THis was supposed to be secret info...

Any ways...where did you get it? Is there a link on SMC website and what are its specs: measurements and weight, and power numbers?

I got it at my LHS. I don't know the dimensional specs....I am trying to find the box it came in...I don't think it lists the dimensions though. However, it is basically the same as the orion, but just a tad lower in height to fit into the t2-007.

Tower Hobbies has them listed already but no specs. Interesting that there are two packs. I am guessing they will be in different form factors.

Interesting...but such a high price? Is it the 22C rating? How much are Orion's C rating, 20C? I'm trying to justify the $150 price tag...ouch...

The only questions that truly matter is who manufactures the cells, and what kind of case (if any) they're in?

Tower also shows them as on order.....

Tower's pricing is not normally accurate until the product has been received into inventory...

SMC5000LT = Traxxas Connector
SMC5000LD = Deans Connector

ThunderPower seems to have a 5000mAh 22C cell. I believe they use Enerland.

No. These are manufactured specifically and exclusively for SMC by a company that specializes in custom LiPo battery packs. My advice would be to just run them and then decide what you think.
We chose to release them without a plastic case because we felt the quality of the packs was evident in their construction. However, we are considering adding a "shell" since the perception in the industry is that any pack that doesn't come in a plastic case is somehow inferior. (Either from a quality or safety standpoint).
We have done extensive testing of these packs and obviously feel they are worthy of wearing the SMC name.

Some of my local track will only allow lipo with a hard case and I think a lot of tracks are starting to do this.

I certainly won't be surprised to hear the pack performs great and is constructed well. How would this thing hold up to a high speed side impact from another touring car though?

In a buggy or other off road car it may not be an issue, however, I just don't see how it isn't inferior to use an unprotected LiPo in a touring car.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this though.
