Tamiya TRF416 / TRF416WE / TRF416X

You only want the balls to touch the plate, and the pulley to touch the balls. If the plates and pulleys touch, then the action becomes less free. Something that a lot of the TRF guys do is to remove the little "pucks" on the pulleys (have a look at a diff pulley, you'll see some raised section between the holes), which helps to free the diff up even more.

thanks Ed for that. I would not had thought along those lines.
well, at least I've had some good practise building and stripping diffs.

For all you TRF techies i have a question.
Raced the TRF416X thursday and did a good quali 1 and 2.
3 one, the car was sliding a bit on the rear.
Checked car but found nothing strange yet
1st finall the car started ok but after a few laps the car slided all over the place.
Checked the car after the finall again and found a little oil coming out of the gear diff at the outdrives.
Replaced the diff with a fresh build one with same oil in it and car was again good for a lap or 4 to 5 and then started to slide again at the rear.
After the race i checked again the whole car, diff wasn't leaking, shocks where ok(no air in them) nothing was binding or bent at all but still the strange thing with the rear of the car.
The car had a fresh set of tires on it at the beginning of the race as this was a controlled event where you only can run one set in a race.
Tires look ok after and before every heat.
Tried saucing them or not, only rear or all 4 nothing helped

Track conditions where almost the same the whole day but still this problem kept resurfacing
Can any one point me in some direction on what it can be?
Was driving it ETS style with motor/ESC combo.
No blisters on the tires from heat or anything.

Check the glue on the tires, if they are coming out or rolling over at all it will throw the car way off like that.

As said above, checked the tires before and after.
No loose side walls, blisters deformations, anything.
You would think that the front are more prone to that because of the forces from the spool and steering but no nothing like that.
Besides you would have the problem right away and not after a few laps.
It was my thirst thought also.

Most likely your tyres, either they are worn, not suitable for the track, or your setup or driving style is punishing them.

Every body had to drive the same tires, tried a new set on the rear, setup was from one of the local guys with same car and driving style is i like a neutral or a bit understeerd car and it was very neutral for the first 2 qualies.
After that something changed that caused the sliding of the rear end of the car.
Track temp was almost the same the whole day
If i only could figure out what it was.
Funny thing was that on the very fast outside turn i had no problems at all.
It was only on the infield(tight turns) that i had problems
Took car apart last night to check again but nothing strange found.
Suspension is moving freely,no bend suspension pins,no cracks in chassis or topdeck,no loose parts, diff wasn't leaking, shocks ok.
I am without a clue to what has happend

ok, well if the car is good for the first few laps and then bad it's probably tyre related. If it's just started sucking in general then probably the diff. You need to isolate the problem, I'd stick the ball diff in and see how that goes. Good luck

Thanks Craig,
Didn't had a good ball diff with me at that time so stuck another gear diff in.
Build me a brand new ball diff just now that runs smooth as butter.
Will try that and see how it go's.
If still no improvement i will try some other tires.

Are you running carpet or asphalt? The last time I was on carpet, I had a similar problem, dialed car on 1st run tires, then the car gets loose and just bad to drive. It boils down to a setup issue that is being masked by 1st run tires. I never figured it out back then..

I tried this out this past weekend, I liked the way it made the car drive. Made the car more "mellow", but still had good steering. This is very easy to do, I just drilled and tapped the bottom shock tower mount hole of the bulkhead cap the rest of the way through, and shortened the ballstud a bit so it wouldnt interfere with the shock tower mount screw.
This gives a similar camber link position to the 417's inner position.

I was running on asphalt and you could be right about the bady thing.
That fast corner is the part of the circuit that they normally use for oval racing but without a banking.
After that fast section it was a tight hairpin and then the sliding started
If it was the tires, then it was because they heated up?
Why is it then that for the first 2 qualies the car was good and after that it was a nightmare the drive?
Switched tires front and rear, put new tires on the back and still no improvement.

This is because you get the aero from the body helping the car out. Low speed corners its all the tires mechanical grip.

But I do have ideas now..
