Anybody have a recommendation for rollout using a Novak 17.5 brushless in 1/12th scale? Also what gearing (spur and pinion) and tire size for that rollout?

You will need a Robinson Racing or RW Racing machined 78T spur gear and pinions in the 50-40T range...if you can fit that in your car.

It is possible that you may never be able to gear that motor properly in a 1/12th car. Guys running 13.5's are gearing as high as 78/42 (or higher) for larger tracks.

A lot of guys at our local track were playing around with the 17.5. You need to gear the motor extremely high. Start your roll out at a 3.00 and go up from there. As Adrian mentioned you will need a small spur and some very large pinions, but it is possible.

Cool Brushless equivalent to 540 sports tuned

The 13.5 turn is a great Stock Electric motor.

However, is there a brushless motor that is equivalent to a 540 sports tuned motor. Our club has several kids for which a 13.5 turn is way too fast.

Similarly, is there a brushless motor that is equivalent to a 540 'silver can' motor. Again, our club has several kids for which even a 540 sports tuned motor is too fast.

The reason that I am asking is that the 540 brushed motors that we have been using are very unreliable, and the motor performance varies significantly from one new motor to another new motor.

some brushless ESC systems have a "sport" mode...like the Velinion systems. Might wanna try using that.

There are 17.5T and 21.5T from Novak.

17.5 is close to a 27t stock motor, but not quite as fast. The 13.5 is faster than a 27t stocker. 21.5 might be close to a "silver can", but I have not seen it tested.

rather, a 17.5 is not as fast as a 27t stock (read shawnh's result links. You'll see) so it might be better for the newbies. A 13.5 EX (non-sintered) is about on par (maybe even a tad slower, at least in RPMs) with a 27t stock. The velinion systems have a sport/training mode that cut its power to 50% so it can be handled better, might wanna look into that as once they're ready, they can turn off the limiter. Granted, those are more powerful than 13.5s....

I do agree on the Velinion system. Currently using it on training mode to run a SS5800 motor for a direct drive chassis and it run like a 27T motor now (slightly faster). I like the consistency of the BL motor compared to brushed.

Currently there is a big gap in pricing difference for 13.5EX, 17.5 and 21.5 to 27T, silver and black cans motors on mini and direct drive chassis application. I hope the pricing gap will come down significantly as the new technology takes over...

Cool

Thanks for the info. I have searched for the Velinion motors, but all I could find was various forum posts and you tubes. Does anybody have a link for the Velinion motor manufacturer? Or am I missing something?

What is a recommended fan setup for a Novak 13.5? This is going in a TC5. Does the LRP fan work?

SpeedPassion has a esc/motor combo kit that has a 540 equivalent motor and they have a RS540 equivalent as well.

Just thought I'd follow up. I guess Novak has sent me a replacement. It took alittle while but it was covered under warranty.

No fan at all. There is no need for one with a 13.5. Neither the speedo nor the motor gets too hot with the amperage flowing through the system. If you get your motor much hotter than 180 deg F even on a hot day outdoors you are overgeared.

Hi guys,

Understand that some of you are able to find that 'sweet spot' of running Mambax Max ESC with at 13.5r previously. Are you guys still running it?

Thanks!
