I think the biggest benefit is simply doing a good job soldering. Poor solder joints will rob more power than any of the wires or bars you use.

... unbent and stretched across all the cells, connect your pos and neg to the last cell and your ready to go. It makes your car much cleaner looking.

The way I used to do mine was to start gluing the weakest battery from the negative end all the way up to the positive with CA.
I would say in order cut back on connections you would need one wire from neg. to motor, and one wire from pos. to battery and then to motor. You easily store them wired like that with an antenna straw cap, but you have to be careful with positive wire where its bared for the battery.
And keep the wires as short as possible. I would keep in mind that the shorter the wire the less heat it can handle. If running mod a little longer wire is a good thing.
Proper scuffing to prep the batteries for solder is the key to good soldering joints.
