He has his AIM Screen name in his profile if someone wants to track him down and get the details. I did send him a PM asking him to update this thread.

UN4RACING, you optimist. Lets be honest, if soomething like this occurs, after you put out the fire, what would be your first thought-seek medical attention OR turn on your computer and post a generic lipo fire story? DING DING DING, seek medical attention. I think dude might have had an accident, but more than likely, it can be chalked up to operator error.

Any battery can be made to explode, have you all forgotten MacGyver?

Lipos are like any rechargeable battery, follow the manufactures' instructions and have a nice day...

BUT I do draw the line on Dylithium Crystals ( The Enterprise was caught in-between parallel universes) and the Flux capacitor got hit by lighting and went back 100 plus years....

I dont know, the whole things seems a little strange to me. You can bet dollars to donuts that if one of the major dudes on these boards had a lipo incident, he wouldnt post it with a spectacular headline and no pics, additional info, NO GUTS to back it up. We want the guts. Tell us everything, not just you were sitting there and the pack just went up in flames. If he is giving us a warning, maybe there is a chance others will have the same pack and a recall is in order. Get where I'm going????

On a serious note, there are 100's of millions of cell phone li-ion batteries (similar chemistry) that don't blow up.
.
The number of li-ion batteries used in r/c is a tiny fraction of those used in electronics, and they are obviously safe.

Default how to treat li-poly batteries

step 1: charge the battery on a charger set for nimh at 6 amps
step 2: if step 1 didn't cause a fire, be sure to put a nice dent into the pack
step 3: discharge the pack to 1.8v (.9 per cell)
step 4: recharge the pack using step 1 and repeat.

If lipo batteries are this dangerous, why has there never been 1 report of the orion or peak encased lipo going up.

They must have sold at least 5k-10k of them worldwide and not 1 case.

I think we should ban lipos and use only nimh, but wait, there have been numerous incidents of those blowing, I have personally seen and heard 2 blow. Lets all go to rubber band power, simply wind up the rubber band and run for 1/2 a lap. I just hope the rubber band doesn't break and put an eye out.

To Gee-Dub: 3 cases found from 100 million sold. I have a much higher chance of winning the lottery. Delpo was obviously watching porn, god's punishment. I hope the philli man wasn't trying to charge the battery in his pocket (was there a cord hanging from his pocket?)

Cellphones are not land lines, they arent desgined for 4 hour conversations. Have you seen how some of these kids get on their cells and stay on for hours? Have you ever been on a cell and feel it getting warm? This is a warning sign that the pack is discharging more than its capability. Sort of like a 50C burst on a r/c car and the driver holds it longer than he should....the linear curve drops, making the pack get HOT.

"On Dec. 6, a Philadelphia-area man suffered second-degree burns on his leg when the spare cell phone battery in his pocket vented" Was he carrying change in that pocket and maybe, just maybe, there was some metal to metal contact? I could have sworn I read it somewhere that you shouldnt walk around with loose cells in your pocket?

He could have been using a aftermarket charger that was generic and didnt have the internal cut-off circuitry. It'll keep pumping the juice after the battery is at capacity then POOF!

It stands to reason that almost anything can be explained if it is examined.

If I remember correctly Cuffs posted pics of the aftermath but wouldnt say what brands of products he was using. I believe at the time he thought the charger had done it.
