Default "Batteries Gone Wild"

At this weekends **Allstar Shootout** at the Encino Velodrome, regular series racer Brad Muther was pulling double duty running in the B/L 10.5 Stock Car class and the 10.5 NASTRUCK class. The NASTRUCK class uses the older 3800 batteries so we have a class to use up 'old stuff'

After the days events were over on Saturday, Brad loaded up and headed off to Camarillo to stay with friends for the night before coming back for day 2 of our event... As he was truckin' up the US101 towards Camarillo he hear a LOUD BANG/Pop from the bed of his truck...then another...then another.

By the time he was able to turn to see what all the noise was, he saw BLACK SMOKE coming from the bed of his truck...as he swerved his P/U from the Fast lane to the RH shoulder....to find his Battery Case was on FIRE and his battery packs were exploding. (See below picture)

Thankfully nothing else was ruined..and NOBODY got hurt.

That case has more padding than a room in a loony bin and look what happened. All of of that metal exposed but not touching anything conductive and his truck was partying like it "was 1999".

Precisely, what is he out of 40 bucks? Now if that were a Li-Po pack, these subterranean c lovers/li-po haters would be coming out of the woodworks with the "I told you so's"

Cool

I had exactly the same thing happen. I had 5 IB packs in a small racers edge box... For some reason, one pack "vented" probably just from the heat in the room, was a hot day... but because there was no way for the heat to escape, a chain reaction... lost 5 packs...

Now I drill vent holes in all my battery storage so at least, if one goes, the heat can escape.

Everybody knows IB cells are very sensitive to heat. If he uses this IB cells more twice on one racing weekend is would be best to let cool down first before storing them..

My friend has similar happened just recent. What I learned is:

Always put each pack in indivisual box, not 8 packs in 1 box.

At least if something happened, it won't blow entire box of battery..

At least it was only batteries and money. Could have been in the trunk of a car and caught it on fire. Now there's an excuse to buy new batteries. I think he planned it hehe. Staged explosion. Just kidding but serious.

See, this would not have happened if he had been using LIPOs

Mini...remember when one of our (former) locals had a similar thing happen in his laundry/hobby room? Burned out the room and all his equipment...cars, chargers, everything.

Increased awareness about safe battery storage can only be a good thing. I've learned a lot about it from LiPo, and would probably treat NiMH much the same (storage bunkers, or whatnot) if I used them again. Anything that stores energy is going to carry some amount of danger.

Look at this, now everyone is talking about how sensitive IB's and sub c's are....when did this happen? I used to run IB 3800's and loved those cells. Never had a problem with them...GP's on the other hand.......
