I dont think I read anywhere in that post that "all packs come from the same place" Even though Adrian does bring up a good point

Hi Adam, we had a discussion at our local track, SIR about lipos and I have been reading up on them, came across Adrian's post earlier.
The TrackPower 4900 will fit under the top deck of my Xray 007 where the Core 5000 is just a hair to tall to clear.
From his post, it seems the cells are both made by the same co.

Fred

The Track Power 4900 uses a diffrent cell from the Core 5000.

Currently I have 5 LiPo's (soon to be 6)
(2) Orion 3200
(2) Trakpower 4900
(1) CORE 5000 (just ordered a second one today)

I have been runing the 2 Orion packs for over a year in my T2R. I run the Trakpower packs in my AE T4 and the CORE pack in my Academy SVB2, but have only been runing these for about a month. So far, I haven't had a problem with ANY of these packs. I use a Scorpion balancing charger from FMA Direct and charge at 1C.

Some people I race with are reporting terrible cell imbalance issues with MaxAmps saddle packs (mostly used in AE B44).
Is this due to the cell configuration and/or quality of the cells?
Or is it that the balancing and 1C charging is really a necessity with LiPo's?

I have also noticed a lot of user error reported with LiPo cell damage/failure. This is one reason the charger I use is LiPo only, so I can't make a mistake with the wrong mode setting. I already had a Duratrax ICE charger, but I purchased an additional charger specifically dedicated to LiPo. Also, my Novak ESC's (GTB & XBR) not only have the LiPo cutoff enabled, I have never ran any of my packs down to the point that the cutoff kicks in.

Anyway, just some questions, observations and comments.

Max Amps batts are not very popular in the R/C plane and Heli market. They tend not to last as long as other batteries. Their saddle packs are 2s2p and if the are getting imbalanced I bet the packs are not very well matched. You need some pretty sophisticated equipment to match Lipos...really only the factory can do it well. This is what Orion never has a probelm with the 4800's... they are 2s2p but they are matched by Kokam from the git-go. Max Amps assembles their packs here in the US.

Even though I'm wary of the cells used in this pack, I decided to pick one up since it seemed to be the best option for the 416 with its connectors coming out one side. I had to remove the balancing plug so it didn't short out on the top deck, so I guess I forfeited my warranty. Anyway, so far, the pack has been great, punchy, and flawless. I'll probably go ahead and buy a second one for the convenience.

Is there any hope that the balancing connector will be made internal, or moved to a place where two opposing corners of the pack (long ways) aren't obstructed? It seems like that would work well in most touring cars, though I guess topdeck design varies quite a bit between them.

I'm using the nexusracing.net lead strips shoo goo'd to the bottom of the case to lock the battery into place. I've had a lot of trouble with flat sided batteries sliding around in the past. This solution has worked VERY well so far. I can't say I feel at all slower using LiPo than I did with NiMH using a 13.5, though maybe having my car exactly at minimum weight helps with that.

so after a few weeks of running without balancing i decided to stick it on the balancer, about 3 mintues later i took it off, lights came on, blinked a few times and was done.

I don't know a ton about Lipos but I can say these Core 5000s perform just as good if not better then any other out there. I have run my car with EPs IBs and the Core. Without adding weight the car is ridiculous in the infield. But a little handful. Once I actually added weight the car was smoother and more balanced.

laptimes have not suffered either
