i was looking at one from radio shack and it seems a good tool for outdoor racing with no a/c power.
The Master appliance ones are refilled with a butane aerosol, I have the smaller iron which will last about 15-20 mins running(depending on settings)

I've seen various Portasol and Weller units which are quite frankly useless. In saying that, Weller also sell two irons which looks to be the same as the UT-50/UT-100 which should be little rippers(I heard they are the same units as the Master ones, just "Re badged").

My first one lasted 10 years before finally giving up the ghost. It's definately one of those things that costs a bit initially but will give you years of service.
I feel most people who rag butane irons are the ones who've bought the cheaper, lower spec units that just aren't up to the job.
