New Tamiya Motors

Hi, anybody had experiences with the new line of tamiya motors?
Any Idea what kinda ratio i should run it at?
I have burned 3 type Ts up already. all running around 6.5 to 7.2.
but if i run it anywhere under 6..it gets really hot after 2mins of runtime.....

Hi Lerlo,

We run those motors regularly over here geard up to 5.8 ratios, some even go as high as 5.5!! never heard of burnt motors so far

I don't use the T's but I use the R and RR's and I know for a fact that you can gear them pretty High...being a little warm to touch isn't a problem...but you should take a look at the Comm and the Brushes just to make sure...... I have seen the T's geared in the 4.95~5.5 Range without a problem:nod:

hmmmm, maybe its made for low ratios then....i ran them at 7+ mostly.......
so in this case i can safely say that it would be alright running the type S on my f201 with the high speed gears?

6.39 is what I'm geared at with my Type T. After a run, you can fry an egg on it. So, really I don't know.:confused:

Undergearing could cause the motor to spin at max rpm for long periods of time, hence greater heat generation. Yes, like the rest I found the RRs actually perform better at the 5.5 region (TL01); 5.9:1 the motor came back pretty hot, at at the 6.5:1 ratio, my 3k pack did not make 5 minutes.

I would like to note however, that the R comes with a pretty stiff spring. My other modified 23t motors that come with lighter springs do not go well with such a high ratio, prefering the 6 plus range.

Lerlo: For the F201 I do not udnerstand the bloody car. I geared it with quite a few ratios they all heat up the motor very rapidly, and the car takes a very long while to dissipates the heat. Annoying....

im confused about the gear ratio...is it spur divided by pinion? is that what u guys are talking about?

Alvin 04-10-2003 10:28 AM

Final Drive = ( Spur / Pinion ) X Transmission Ratio

So e.g. my 414 to run 5.7:1 final drive is

( 115 / 43 ) X 2.133 = 5.7

davioh 04-10-2003 10:29 AM

whats the transmission ratio of an evo 3?

Alvin 04-10-2003 10:32 AM

I would guess it is 2.6:1, if it uses the same stuff as a TB01, TB Evo? Check with the Evo 3 thread: I am pretty out of touch with the r/c world in general. Imagine my chargrin when ppl tell me about TA04 TRF. I thought it was a joke lol.

Alvin 04-10-2003 10:32 AM

BTW you can check your manual; there should be a section stating down the ratios achievable by a particular spur/pinion combo. Since you know the spur, pinion size and final drive, just do a bit of maths to get the transmission ratio.

davioh 04-10-2003 10:34 AM

oh rite...that thing...thanks alvin

davioh 04-10-2003 10:35 AM

spur = 96
pinion = 39
final = 6.40

Try out about a 5.8~6.0 range and see how it performs...
Almost every 23T Stock that I use ...I gear in the 4.95~6.0 Range...with 6.0 being the upper limmit:nod:

JDM_DOHC_SiR,
Have you ever raced a HPI Super Stock 23T? What ratio were you using with it? The one I used came with stand up brushes... thanks!
