Are there any articles online, or any books that anyone would recommend?

Heres the simplest way to do it if you actualy plan on building your car.
step #1-
Find all the parts that are standardized off other cars. You aren't going to re-invent a belt and pully or shocks so figure out what you want and use that.

pick out a good 3d cad program and put the objects your using in cad w/ the apropiate measurements taken so that the car will assemble well.

The main pieces that need to be ultra precise should have adjustable mounting locations so that you can make sure everything lines up right such as the distance from a front diff to a rear diff if your making a 4wd car similar to that of nitro engines.

keep in mind that your going to have to have these parts built, the simpler the parts the easier it will be for you to have it built in a machine shop.

There is know way to know how it is going to truly perform with everything in it so build it to be adjustable.
