Hudy Tech with V guides and a diamond bit. Great cut all the time. I cut for me, my brother and one of my buddies. Had it for almost a year and no problems.

I have a Trinity and I wouldn't recomend it. You can get a better lathe for much less...If I were to buy a lathe again, I would get the Hudy, they are truly quality pieces of engineering. The new fantom one looks nice too, but it's a bit pricey!

Go for the Xipp lathe!
I use a Xipp lathe and it works flawlessly. the setup directions are not the greatest of help but once you see how to work it and do some experimental cuts on an old comm to get it right it is no problem at all.
The key is the bit height and angle, as long as you are no higher than the center of the comm you are cutting.
I am using their slave motor but any stock one will do,just run it on 4 cells with a stock motor.
Make your cuts SLOWLY and be sure to use some cutting fluid!
try several cuts to get the smoothest cut and you are ready to do a real motor comm, Good luck with your new (Xipp) Lathe..

Just dont get one with ball bearing guides, the V guides are smoother.

Chalk up another vote for the Hudy from me. The Hudy Advanced lathe I have (with V Guides) is awesome...
If you want to spend a ton, you might also check out the new one from Fantom...

I might get a lathe over the winter. I hate askin people if they can take thier's out and do a couple for me. I feel like such a pain in the butt sometimes.
I was looking at Hudy or Fanthom, but i've been watching everyone's comments on the others.

I bought an old Cobra one from a friend.
Paid $100NZ with diamond and carbide bits, cutting fluid too.
Very happy.
I can do my own comm's and after watching people doing my motors before, it only took one or two practices before I was cutting my race motors.

i have a cobra lathe ($99 from tower) with carbide bit. ive used it for 2 years with no problems. i think cobra recently released one with a diamond bit for a higher price. for the ulitimate lathes, i think those from hudy are among the best. a bit pricey though but you get what you pay for.

Yeah, I also have some practice armatures that i can ruin ( GM3....can we say "poof" ). I don't want to spend over $300, so i've been looking mostly for Bang for the Buck lathe...

I use the COBRA PRO COM 2000, I paid $100 used and it had a diamond bit. I love this tool, there are a few tools I will never part with and this is one. Big Jim Greenemyer (sp?) the desighner of the P2K, used one for years, and loved it, now I believe he uses the Xipp lathe. If one of the 2 or 3 top motor builders in the US believes that highly in a product then you know it's worth the money.....BTW he actually wore out the carbide blocks on his cobra, but I dought any of us racers will ever cut that many comms in a lifetime.
