if they need a push to get started it sounds like either your gear mesh is too tight or you have a hung brush. check those first.

a hung brush happens when the brush is cocked sideways in the hood, and the spring is too weak to force the brush to make contact with the comm. clean out the brush hoods and put on new springs.

small sparks are ok, but if the sparks are rather large this means the edges of brush are dragging in the separations of the comm plates.

they are only small but will having a hung brush cause performance fluctuations cos i can be going slow then all of a sudden i get the full power of an 11X1 when ur not expecting it

check the windings for discoloration and possibly a loose winding. the hung brush would make for an 11X1 to feel like a 540 maubachi.

the armature is fine and there is not wobble of the brushes in the hood could the spring tension be the problem

too soft of a spring could make the brushes bounce alot and could possibly cause a lack of performance. you should be using a trinity purple on both the pos. and neg.
