The penalty box was after the sweeper. They were using it for any rough driving.

It's where you go when you do something bad

Here's a picture of the location from last year.

Not knocking on Barry's or Brian's skill or the Trinity motors, but SoCal is a small track...19T and 8-9T motors won't get near the same laptimes on a larger track like Revelation or Tamiya. Fast stock guys are often nearly as fast as mod guys at SoCal.

So the referee will pick up the car and put it in the box?

I think you drive you car there until the referee tells you to go...
It's more like a stop and go....this way you do not block incoming cars. In most cases it's a 1 second stop and go.

Basically you haul ass into a painted box surrounded by wooden boards, slam on the brakes hoping not to wad your car up into the corner, while trying to get your car pointed in the direction you want to exit so you can make a quick getaway. But it's not like I'm talking from experience or anything hehe. J/K.

Lets try to keep penalty box usage to a minimum.

It's up out of the racing line to so your tires get nice and dirty. Your one second penalty turns into a 4 or 5 second penalty.

...hopefully the box will be used more and with more consistancy than last year. I seem to remember some people got away with murder while others were penalized for incidental contact...
