you can buy a special tool i think. Sort of like a bearing puller but it has a shaft that pushes against the motor shaft and a claw that grabs the pinion. you then wind it up and it forces the pinion off. i "think".

Use a hex wrench you dont mind losing, put some JB weld on it, stick the wrench in the pinion, let dry, unscrew and toss in the trash.

You can save that hex wrench by cutting off the tip/screw with a dremel. Cheapo L-shaped wrenches that is.

Ive used a pair of needle nose pliers before. Put the tip between the motor and the pinion and pry it off....It wont mess anything up other than some paint on the motor and maybe the pinion.

While most of the time that works fine, I've seen people start to pull the shaft out of a motor using that method.

Default Slot car pinion puller

Get yourself a slot car pinion puller. I got a pinion puller at the LHS that has three different size tips for different size motor shafts. Works great. Then you can easily get the set screw out.

get a pinion puller (or better yet, split the cost among your rc buddies ) for the next stripped pinion accident

cut a slit on the screw with a dremel and use a flatblade to get it out...would cost cheaper than a "pinion puller"
