I am going to read this thread back a few pages to try and pick up some more info, but any tips or tricks are appreciated!

I would get 2 upper shaft holders to start. as far as manufacturers

Default R2 box stock

I plan on getting a new kit. I considered the R2 but was
discouraged after knowing it needed so much hop ups.
The FTC3, Surikarn Evo3 are competitve out of the box.
Are these hop ups really necessary for the R2 to match
FTC3 and Evo3 out of the box? Or are the hop ups available
just for show? Does the R2 have a chronic problem
box stock ( like the Evo3...front one way gear...FTC3...weak
arms...SD3...universals )

Pls. advice....tnx

THe R2 is built like a tank...it can withstand more abuse than a TC-3 or a EvoIII any day of the week......also the only thinks that you might need would be the alloy front and rear center shaft holders thats it... you would still be better of that you would with a TC-3 or EVOIII

just my 2 bits but.... just ask the other users here

I already had the alloy shaft holders in mind, but are there any other parts I should look at right when I get the kit?

I would say spur gears are the achilies heal of the cuda but thats easily fixed. Unlike other kits where you're likely to break things like suspension arms and keep breaking them until a major design change comes along. The barracuda itself is incredibly strong, I don't crash a lot, now , but I have had a few at my club events due to a lack of rostrum and me trying to clip corners dots I can't see properly not a pretty site at full speed when your car goes summersualting half way down the striaght and then into some bushes. Nothing broken at all, my shell on the other hand is looking very rough now I managed to tear it at the front in the middle of the shell, not near an edge I think that was the head on with a wooden fence post

The durability aspect of the Cuda is one of the reasons I really like it. I am planning on building the car to be run mainly in stock classes, which seems to be what it's good at. I am also going to get the Speedway PAL system for it, as that seems like it will help in the fight against chewing spur gears, especially since I like to run 64 pitch.

Why does this question keep coming about the Cuda needing hopups?? The Cuda doesn't need ANY hopups to be competitive- just look at the results at Reedy where Dave Bergers car was pretty much box stock- including the shock springs! Dave installed the alloy shaft carriers true but they cost the same as the optional Yoke SD oneway and everybody knows oneways are a must to keep the motor from overheating. My car has the stock drive system and stock shaft carrier and has no problem taking wins in prostock. Don't forget- the TC3 didn't make the non factory A-mains at Reedy and the Surikarn will cost $400 anyway.

Default changing spur gear

I'm considering getting a cuda and have some questions. How easy/hard is it to change out the spur gear? How many screws to remove and how much time?

Also, it seems like a lot of people aren't running with the dust covers. Are extra parts needed to remove them?

TIA!

It's not easy to change, like most shaft drive cars. How much work it requires depends on if you use the diff covers or not. Without the covers you could just remove the topdeck and get access, maybe dismantle the shaft a little to make things easier to manouver. With the sheilds on you need to remove them too which means removing the shock towers, I'm also thinking you could just remove the top deck screws at the rear, then remove the lower bulkhead screws at the rear, remove the two rear most pivot balls screws so the rear suspension arms will rotate forwards a bit, then you can slide the rear diff/bulkhead assembly out backwards, pulling the shaft out of the small bevel gear as you go, which leaves access to the spur, I've never actually done it like that yet though.
Then there are different ways if you have the Speedway PAL drive system, with that and no diff sheilds it would probably be quickest.

JPN: All the guys are correct, you don't need to hop up the R2. Check out FATBOY JOE's Barracuda this Saturday at ROCKWELL. Watch how it will run, box stock.

You guys are saying that the Cuda is built like a tank, but are indicating that the stock spur setup might chew up gears. Is that why you need the Pal system? Would it chew up gears if you don't have the Pal system in place? Also, what does the Pal system really do to improve the car?

I'm trying to figure out how important the PAL system is as well. I am definately getting a Cuda when Steve gets back, but I really want to know what to order with it.
